In early Feb-2021, Chase sent email to credit card holders about the changes to the section of "Cash-like" Transaction of the Cardmember Agreement. The changes take effect 4/7/2021.
4. Important Definitions
• The "Cash-like Transactions" section within the Important Definitions section of your Cardmember Agreement is replaced to clarify and expand the definition as follows:
WHAT IT MEANS: Cash-like transactions will be treated as cash advances. Cash-like transactions include, but are not limited to, the following transactions to the extent they are accepted:
• purchasing travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, other similar digital or virtual currency and other similar transactions;
• purchasing lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers, and similar offline and online betting transactions;
• person-to-person money transfers and account-funding transactions that transfer currency; and
• making a payment using a third party service including bill payment transactions not made directly with the merchant or their service provider.
Data Point of Chase charging cash advance fees on any transactions (before and after 4/7/2021)
•
•
•
Data Point of any credit card banks that charge cash advance fees on popular payment systems (Paypal, Plastiq, Venmo etc)
• Cash advance at bank branch, from credit card
• Bond or bail posted at court and police station
•
Word to the Wise: It may be advisable to contact Chase ahead of time to reduce your cash advance limit to a minimum on the card you intend to use.

I paid my 2020 federal taxes and 2021 Q1 1040 ES with my Chase WoH card, both went through normally. I contacted Chase ahead of time to reduce my Cash Advance limit to $100 on that card, so I was confident when it went through. My statement already closed for the estimated tax payment and I earned full points.

Looking for DPs for an upcoming USMint purchase. Anyone buy anything with Chase since this went into effect? Many thanks.

Any recent experience with venmo payment using cc (e.g. Hyatt/BA/CSP/CSR)? I recently got the BA card and wondering if I can use venmo payment as a way to hit spending bonus?

I've used VENMO twice with my CSP post-rule change and did not get hit with a cash advance charge. In each instance, the payment was a small amount and within the cash advance limits of the card ($100-$200).

Just got my CSP approved.
Do you have the MCC for the Venmo top ups?
From here, it seems Venmo comes with MCC 7399, which is rather safe IMO, since it is only the MCC 6xxx that are more for "finance" related (plus 4829 and 4821).
My experience with BofA (Visa) cards, if Chase relies on Visa's classification, these may be similar.
MCC 4829 clocked as cash advance.
MCC 6051 clocked as cash advance.
I will get back here when I've tried some of these with my CSP.

I've just put through a larger amount on venmo via CSR and Hyatt in the amount of $250, $500 and $1500.
All been going through as Venmo (Description) and as Business Services (Merchant Type). All transactions posted today and I've gotten appropriate bonus points associated.
PS: All were under my given card's cash advance limit

I was thinking about buying visa gift cards on staples.com to meet the spending bonus requirement on a new Ink Cash. If I'm reading the terms right, this should be ok.
This is P2's card and she won't buy gift cards in person so staples.com is really my only option. Anyone think this is pushing it?
