In 2017, at the first renewal of the 2016 Chase Sapphire Reserve card,* no retention offers have been forthcoming. It appears that Chase is not offering retention bonuses on this card at this time, and will cancel the card at the cardholders request without further ado.

*A retention offer has been reported (though it's minimal): https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/28917524-post376.html

Posts 333 and 327 discuss a fee credit issued by Chase when cancelling the card. These have been called both "Annual Fee Refund" and "Membership Fee Credit."

This thread discusses the timing of both cancelling and product changing (downgrading to Sapphire Preferred) in order to 1) Keep from paying the $450 annual fee, and 2) possibly get a 2018 $300 travel credit before cancelling.

The rules changed for the travel credit on cards issued in May 2017, making the travel credit a calendar year issuance rather than a Dec statement to Dec Statement issuance.

The nuances discussed within this thread include changing your billing date, fees posting on the 1st of the month, and the 30 day window to cancel/60 day window to product change.

Even without activating the category online?

More likely to be in this thread:

New Chase policy (Oct 2016): No Annual Fee refund >30 days after AF billed.

Seems like the regular Sapphire card has the same trip cancellation/interruption insurance (albeit with a lower limit) as the Sapphire Reserve. If I had booked flights with the Sapphire Reserve and later downgraded to the Sapphire regular before travelling, would the trip insurance still be in effect? I want to use the travel credit but do not want to risk losing the trip insurance after cancelling the card.

Definitely interested in this--can you point me to a thread on point?

I'd look at the thread posted above by mia - Chase Freedom 2018, 1st Q, Bonus Categories

Basically you buy GCs at places selling them that correspond to that quarter's bonus categories. I already have the Chase Ink so I buy them at office supply stores if I can't get them discounted elsewhere. But for example, if one of the categories turns out to be Warehouse Clubs at some point this year (Discovered is currently doing 5x at Warehouse Clubs), I could buy them at Sam's Club where you get a slight discount off face value on top of the 5x you'd earn from the Freedom card.

Hm so a downgrade qualifies for an AF refund posted 30+ days ago?

Edit: nm googled it and see we have 60 for full and prorated after that.

I too am interested in the answer to this ... I'm wondering if you found out anything?

Yes. You must have the CSP for at least 1 year before Chase will allow this.

Do they prorate fees? I will be upgrading in middle of the billing year for my CSP.

Yes. You get a pro-rated refund of your CSP annual fee when you product change outside of the 60 day window.
