I am looking at Belize as a possible honeymoon location and have come across The Inn at Robert's Grove and Victoria House as two somewhat remote resorts that are decently priced.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these resorts?

I have a trip report from 1999. The Inn at Robert's Grove was quite nice.

Placencia and Ambergris Caye are two vastly different environments with Placencia being much more remote and ah, spread out.

I've seen good things about San Pedro, Belize from Royal Holiday. It is in Ambegris Caye, one of Belize's most famous islands...have you considered visiting it?

I've spent 14 days in Belize in the last 16 months. I really prefer the more laid back, slower pace to Caye Caulker. I've described Caye Caulker to others as a "delightful sh**hole" given how you can walk - barefoot - just about anywhere; and if you can't walk there, a golf cart taxi (no gas powered vehicles here) costs $5. The standard building is brightly colored, run down, has a nice flower garden, and has a corrugated tin roof. Dining is much more tasty than elegant. This year, I literaly took my sneakers off at the airstrip and did not put any footwear on for a week- save my scuba fins!!! The Caye is generally safe and inviting - vendors may offer their wares, but take no graciosly. I've heard of stupid property crime, but "violent" crime seems inconsistent with the "go slow" motto and overall atmosohere.

But it may not be the right place for a honeymoon in that it might be too comfortably run down. (1) there are 2 stereotypical visotors: - first, divers who may not care about much else, and second, laid back German and Scandinavian backpackers. I've generally done scuba trips there with my buddys, and it could get a bit dull if you don't dive or spend 4 days in a registration course (which is cheap on the island).

Should I advise honeymooners there, I would certainly counsel the Iguana Reef Inn. Its on the quiet, back, side of the island, but an easy (5 block) and safe walk to the "action" to whatever it exists on CC.

Iguana Reef Inn has kinda hacienda arcitecture, a small pool, and a wonderful groomed area for strong drinks and perfect sunsets, as it is on the back side of the island. It was so fantastic that I could go with my best scuba buddy friends for drinks, and we all talked about how we need to scare up some ladies to make the experience right. Then we went out and got drunk and didn't care.

It may be that if you want to get scuba certified or otherwise split your vacation between islands, it would be right for you. The price is right - you won't get soaked, but it is enough to keep the riff raff (e.g., me) out.

My fiancee and I like the slow, secluded feel and will probably bring a good amount of books and just relax in a hammock or on the beach.

Here are some detailed reviews of the top hotels in Belize. You might want to check into Francis Ford Coppola's Turtle Inn place in Placencia too. Rates are good considering how it compares to similar places in the Caribbean.

I also HIGHLY recommend either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker. I could write for hours about each. Just rest assured, that at either, you will have an amazingly relaxed vacation/honeymoon. I would not choose Ambergris Caye. My wife and I have made 10 trips there in the past 5 years (every beginning of December and middle of February). We are not going there any more due to it's increased population and crime. We feel it is no longer safe for my wife to walk the beach. We have viewed, as in toured, practically every hotel/mini resort on the island. Someone mentioned Victoria House. Aside from a couple of spots North on the island which might come close, Victoria House wins hands down on AC. While I can do absolutely nothing with the best of them, Caye Caulker would be a challenge...and next to nill in the way of beach walking...and no descent accommodation. Having said all that, I would choose Placencia or one of several inland retreats such as Coppula's or Chan Chich...or another country.
