Incorrect Response from CX HKG Ground Agents
Based on https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...olo-agent.html
Existing stories I can think of:
1. Travelling to South Africa on British Emergency Passport (Emergency Travel Document) https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...f-mistake.html
Outcome: OP admitted to travel on next day on same documents
2. Return ticket requirement for South Korea https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...ed-me-off.html
Outcome: OP bought a one-way ticket to satisfy CX requirement

I'll add one of my own from Sep 19 3. NZeTA required from 1 October 2019 to visit or transit New Zealand
Missus and I checked in separately
My check in with CX:
"Mr Smith, where is your return ticket"
"I don't need one I'm an Australian citizen
I can live in New Zealand till I die"
The agent refused to believe me but I refused to produce my return ticket. She found my return ticket on her own to satisfy herself before I can give her a lesson on Timatic reading.
Missus's check in with CX. Non-Australian visa-exempt passport holder:
"Is she travelling on this?"
"Yes"
"Where's the ETA"
"Don't need one. Doesn't it say only needed from 1 October?"
"So?"
"What date is today?"
The agent let her through.

(this may be correctly denied boarding case, so I'll label it as (a))
a. One parent travelling to South Africa with children in May (?) 2019 no other parent affidavit https://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/news...00176_047.html.
Outcome: US$100 voucher. On review I'm not sure this is even incorrectly denied boarding as the affidavit requirement was made effective in Nov 2019 despite being announced in Dec 2018 https://www.atta.travel/member-news/...g-the-country/ , so I'm not sure there's a valid complaint here.

4. District Councillor Louis Ho was denied boarding on BNO to Taiwan due to previous use of HKSAR passport to enter Taiwan, was only allowed boarding when he showed GA an OD article https://hk.on.cc/hk/bkn/cnt/news/201...00822_001.html stating HKSAR and BNO can be used interchangeably.
Outcome: Ho was admitted to Taiwan with BNO. However, a follow up enquiry with Taiwan NIA https://maddog.myradio.hk/2020/01/12...0%8D%E5%9C%B0/ stated that such passport change between visits was "not recommended" even if permitted because it requires NIA border officers to update their records.

Like Louis Ho you won't be given the runaround.
(I rather not open a new post for this but 5. CX/UO GAs can't demand a pregnancy test for the US https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...l#post31955545)

Not just CX
In my travels around Asia, ground staff at many Asian airports, whose first language is not English tends to interpret the rules on the side of caution.

Which is entirely reasonable. What is not reasonable is that a worldwide carrier such as CX does not push its staff to a "help" desk to interpret the rules for any non-obvious situations.
