What do you mean by pre-arrange with TA first? So, you can only book these "free-upgrade" tix through TA?

I don't see any official announcement on CX/KA's website regarding this "promo".

But when I can buy a roundtrip ticket for HK$1290 (any day that I can see (min/max 2/7 nights, no miles)) and business class for HK$6560 with a total cost of HK$9140, why would I spend HK$9900 for this "special offer"? Pay HK$760 more to gain 3116 AsiaMiles?

That really doesn't seem very special to me.

well, the extra is actually less than 3,116, because the business class ticket in your example earns the 25% J bonus, but not the upgraded segments in this Shanghai Pass (officially, although I have heard my colleagues have got it)...

but I think there could be a couple of reasons this Shanghai Pass is better:
  • people trying to qualify by sectors instead of miles (i.e. 6 sectors instead of 2.5)
  • people requiring 0/30D min/max flexibility instead of 2/7D (I often buy same-day or one-night tickets and usually most discount tickets require 2 nights)
  • the HKD 1290 fare actually is quite restrictive in terms of flight choice (if I remember right), while this fare should give quite good availability on all flights (availability of H class usually not bad)

Agree with tedhl, and plus that H ticket can change in-bound flight as many time as you want after departure for free, which for my last SHG trip, I changed my in-bound flight 4 times to accomedate meeting scheldue ....
