op up to first class?

flew with a friend the other day HKG-PVG. both on J fares. i'm OW emerald, he's MPC gold. we arrived at the airport very late. i did the whole first class check-in bit, strutted around, acted like an d-bag, and felt pretty good about myself

but then upon boarding, i realized he was upgraded to first class while i was stuck in business.

what the!! looks like he got the last laugh. MPC > OW status? or simply a function of me checking in 30 seconds before him?

this was also only the second time i've ever seen anyone bumped to first class.

From kchika - Op-up priority

1. CX Diamond Plus
2. CX Diamond, CX Invitation
3. CX Gold
4. CX staff
5. CX staff nominees, Non-CX staff
6. Oneworld Emerald
7. Oneworld Sapphire
8. CX Silver
9. Oneworld Ruby
10. CX Green
11. Asia Miles
12. Non status
and i am happy about this priority (although i am just a lowly SL and will never get higher). cx has to treat their own frequent flyers better. they were quite generous comparing to other OW airlines

ah - makes sense. one of these days i'm going to take the plunge and leave AA. any reason not to? spend all my time in HK anyway. (tho i find asia miles redemptions expensive and the qualification criteria are harder)

I'm happy to hear this as a Gold MPC member (sorry, non CX OW Emeralds)
I've been always wondering (back then) why CX preferred to treat OW Elites better than their own.

Yea, they put the GOs ahead of Sapphires...you may want to consider switching, although CX is quite generous to other OW members like yourself. When we head back to the US or Europe and do AA or BA there is almost zero recognition of CX members. I once had an AA lady at the Admiral's Club in Chicago ask me what Cathay Pacific was.

I heard of a few MPC GRs getting op-ups in the last year or so. My feeling is that CX might have moved MPC members even higher.

Totally agree. I think CX treats other OW members much better than how BA/AA/QF etc... treat other OW members. OW elite members have higher op-up priority than MPC SL, while MPC DM/GD members can't even be assigned some preferred seat on AA flights. Two years ago when I checked in at Boston airport for an AA flight, the agent even did not let me use the domestic first class check-in counter ( I was a MPC gold).

Not just you. Last March, CX SFO flights to HKG were all overbooked because of Rugby Sevens. I overheard (if I heard correctly) the check-in lady telling a passenger at a J counter that Y was so overbooked that they op-upped all members. That passenger was so grateful.

CX Golds are not entitled to F check-in counters (on any airline, including CX/KA) unless flying F.

Even when flying CX/KA, CX GO members (OW Sapphire) are only allowed to check-in in the Business Class/Marco Polo counters, unless we are flying on F.

Similar for lounge access at the Wing/Pier. Only DM (OW Emerald) members are allowed access to F section regardless of the class they are flying. GO members will only be able to access F if they are flying F.
