The gate agent actually has to check it against a paper print-out instead of just sliding the magnetic bar code, which turns a 2 seconds give-n-go process into a 15 second give-wait-check-go proceed. This is not an upgrade but a downgrade in service in my opinion. Chalk up another IT blunder for CX.

I'm sure bar code readers will make it out here some time

I bet it takes longer than 13 seconds to check in at the airport, even using a self-service kiosk.

If you have luggage it wouldn't matter, you have to go to the counter agent anyway.

Also, it's relative time that we're comparing, not absolute time. If you want to compare absolute time then we all arrive at the airport hours ahead of departure anyway.

Relatively speaking the boarding time is considerably delayed because of these home-made BPs. The boarding at the gate is very smooth with airline BPs, and all of a sudden the agent had to stop, check a manifest, and then allow boarding, that breaks the flow. 1 or 2 is ok, but last time I was in line there were 7-8 of them. Needless to say the Y line finish way ahead of J line because of these self-printed BP, and J line had half the people as Y line.

Also do cx supply pillows for Y passengers?

I'm only asking cos my mother and I have been arguing over bringing a cusion or not to shield us from perhaps being a little uncormfortable on those olympus seats I've heard about.

yes but those pillows are useless. you need about 2-3 before you actually start feeling they're there. i would suggest to bring your own

Excellent thread, thank you everyone!

Yes you get a lower boarding number when checking in online especially at 48 hours before departure. It does help when it comes to a tie breaker op-up.

I'm flying LHR-HKG on CX in First, connecting in Hong Kong to CX HKG-MEL in Business. I understand per below that I'll have to go through a security check in HKG even though I remain airside:

In transit you simply need to go through a security checkpoint to get from the arrivals level to the departure level.

According to the FAQ, the amenity I'd get on the LHR-HKG flight would be as follows:

The amenity kits contain three or four small tubes of lotions and lip balm (exact details of which depend on the gender of the kit), and a toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash and comb.
Since "tubes of lotions and lip balm . . . and toothpaste, mouthwash . . . ." are considered to be "liquids", will the amenity kit (or the tubes, toothpaste, and mouthwash) be confiscated during this process, or will I be able to keep them for my onward flight to Melbourne?

Will not be confiscated. Done it many times without issue. Won't raise an eyebrow.

Thanks for the quick response!

Now, does anyone have any experience at the other end -- do they confiscate the amenity kits when you go through security at Heathrow? (To clarify -- On the way back, I connect in LHR to STR on BA, so I have to go through Heathrow security after getting off CX.)

A few more datapoints on upgrades.

I have now qualified three times for status Gold/DM/DM. Each time I've been upgraded J->F on my first long haul flight after qualifying. It could be a coincidence, although on the Gold upgrade I saw the manifest mention something like "qualification upgrade".

I am currently upgraded CX255 HKG-LHR on 10/10/10. In every case there was a plausible operational issue. When I asked why today the attendant said "flight full". Indeed J was totally sold out and F was mostly empty and they op'ed up at least four people.

In addition to the long haul upgrade of exactly one per year, I have received one short haul upgrade J-F on CX475 TPE-HKG and two semi-upgrades on HKG-SAP-HKG where they have two class service on a 747. They sat me in the F compartment with J service. The F cabin had not been open for seat assignments.
