Qs relating to the FAQ thread

This thread is for:

Clarification of a section in the FAQ
Any questions/concerns after reading the FAQ
Adding additional info to contribute to the FAQ

Please read the FAQ FIRST before you post questions, as most answers can be found there!

There are many FABFAQ's (Frequently asked but frequently answered questions) in the FAQ such as:

What aircraft am I flying?
Will I have the new seats?
What are the new seats like? and so on...

So after reading the FAQ, if you're still lost, feel free to post something here for our fellow FTers to help you out!

Happy asking!

kchika Jan 27, 2009 8:42 am

Guy Betsy used to have a sub-forum dedicated to FAQs about CX in the good old days of CathayTalk. :D I wonder if he'll post them here?

etkuo Jan 27, 2009 8:43 am

ya i would second that. there are always repeated questions on the forum. plus it will be easier for members to find out the answers without doing a search all the time. i remember at the time of CathayTalk they had a nice FAQ too

QRC3288 Jan 28, 2009 7:08 am

In complete agreement...new configs (particularly J debate), MPC reset and general status questions, Pier/Wing differences, etc.etc....a few questions seem to be very common

b-kpf Feb 2, 2009 9:36 am

since some people were talking about an FAQ thread, I'll pull up the thread again. hopefully we can get this going? =)

started some questions. more contribution would be appreciated!

Just a few things that spring to mind:

Marco Polo vs One World status with respective benefits
Booking classes / rules
Baggage allowance (CX, OW, CX+OW), but this may be more trouble then it's worth with the ever changing requirements

QRC3288 Feb 4, 2009 3:12 am

About the only thing missing from this thread is Guy Betsy's resounding endorsement...:D

And a very imprtant topic: New and old seats, which aircraft fly where

Q5

I've added, corrected, and modified Q5 to make it more precise and consistent.

Boeing 747-400
744- This version of the 747-400 has old long-haul first, business, and economy seats
74A- This version of the 747-400 has new first, business, and economy seats
Boeing 777-200 and 300's
777- 777-200 version of the triple 7, with old regional business and old economy seats
773- 777-300 version of the triple 7, with old regional business and old economy seats
77A- 777-300ER version of the triple 7, with new first, business, and economy seats. Cathay's newest aircraft
Airbus 330
33B- This version of the airbus has the new business and new economy seats
333- This version of the airbus has the old long-haul first, business, and economy seats
330- This version of the airbus has the old regional business (or NRBC?) and old economy seats
Airbus 340
34B- This version of the airbus has the new business and new economy seats
34C- This version of the airbus has the old long-haul first, business, and economy seats
34D- This version of the airbus has the old long-haul business and economy seats
Dragonair
33R- This version of Airbus 330 is the only version that has first class, with old business and economy seats. PTV available only in first class
33A- This version of Airbus 330 has the old business and economy seats. PTV available in every seat
33L- This version of Airbus 330 has the new business and economy seats. PTV available in every seat
321- The Airbus 321 has the old business and economy seats. No PTV available
32P- The Airbus 320 has the old business and economy seats. No PTV available
Others
EQV-also stands for equipment varies aka the aircraft used changes often. sorry can't help to tell you what you're going to be on!

I thought it is important to make the distinction between CX's old long-haul J and regional J. At least for me that's a huge difference. Not sure if NRBC still exists though. Is 330 the one that has it? You are correct regarding the codes on the 330's; they are 33B/C/D while 33A/L/R are used by KA. Please note that there's no F in 777 and 773, however.

Anyone want to answer this one? I don't have the time to list them all and explain them

Note: I don't know everything, so if there's mistakes in these answers, please tell me!!!

Fare Class (In order of importance)

First Class
F/A fares earn 150% Club Miles/Asia Miles
F = full fare
A = discount fare, RTW fare
Z = First Class award

Business Class
J/C/D/I earn 125% Club Miles/Asia Miles, and are mileage upgradeable to First
J = full fare
C = discount fare
D = discount fare, RTW fare
I = deeply discount fare, CX Holidays Business Class fare, promotional fare
U = Business Class award

Economy Class
Y/B/H/K/M/L/V earn 100% Club Miles/Asia Miles, these are also the fare class for the Gold/Diamond seat guarantee

Y = full fare
B/H/K = discount fare, upgradeable with miles
M/L/V = discount fare, not upgradeable with miles, L is the RTW fare

Others such as S/Q/G = deep promotional fare, cannot earn miles nor upgrade.

P.S. Perhaps moderator can make this a sticky?

So if you can think of any FAQ's, reply on this thread and post the question (and answer if you can).

Questions:
1. How do you get upgraded?
2. What is the difference between Asia Miles and Marco Polo Club
3. What are the FFP programs for CX? (submitted by QRC3288)
4. How many club miles do I earn for MPC, flying on an OneWorld airline?
5. What aircraft will I be flying in? New seats or old? -Includes CX and Dragonair(submitted by kchika)(credits to ernestnywang for editing)
6. What are the baggage allowances for CX flights?(submitted by QRC3288)
7. What are the differences between The Pier and The Wing? (submitted by QRC3288)
8. What are the fare classes for Cathay Pacific Flights, and what are their restrictions? (submitted by QRC3288)Needs answering!
9. What are the LAG rules for Cathay Pacific?

1. How do you get upgraded?

Ans: You can get upgraded 3 ways.
- Mileage Upgrade
- Cash upgrade
- Operational Upgrade
Operational upgrades (op-ups) do not occur frequently, usually when the cabins in a certain class is oversold. Op ups usually are given to Marco Polo members first, followed by OneWorld Members, and then non-members, either at check in, at the lounge, or at the boarding gate. Note: Asking for op-ups will put you at the bottom of the list for upgrades. Boarding number (BN) has to do with upgrade priority. When there are more members of the same status than there are seats that are available for upgrade, the person with the lower BN gets upgraded. However, as with any airline, there are certain exceptions, and unique situations.

2. What is the difference between Asia Miles and Marco Polo Club
or
3. What are the FFP programs for CX? (submitted by QRC3288, hemz88)
Ans: Marco Polo is for elite qualification. The application fee for MPC is $50 USD. MPC members are divided into 4 tiers: green, silver, gold, and diamond. Club members earn club/miles sectors to upgrade to the next tier, but are reset every membership year. Mileage that is earned in MPC also counts towards your Asia Miles. These miles DON'T reset every year.

To reach the different tiers, you have to earn in ONE membership year:
Diamond Plus- Invitation Only
Diamond- 120,000 miles or 80 sectors. You also gain oneworld Emerald Status
Gold- 60,000 miles or 40 sectors. You also gain oneworld Sapphire Status
Silver- 30,000 miles or 20 sectors. You also gain oneworld Ruby Status
Green- 4 sectors only. No oneworld status gained.

Benefits for each MPC tier and each OW tier can be found at:
http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_.../mpo/clubmiles
and
http://www.oneworld.com/ow/ffp/oneworld-status

Asia Miles is for mileage accrual and redemption only. It is free, but it does not have the benefits such as lounge access, business class check-in, etc. that Marco Polo Club members have.

4. How many club miles do I earn for MPC, flying on an OneWorld airline?
Ans: For Cathay Pacific, you gain 150% club miles for flying F or A in first class, 125% for flying C, J, D, or I in business class, and 100% club miles for flying Y, B, H, K, M, L, V class in economy.
For other OW airlines, this can be checked at http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_HK/ffp/mpo/oneworld

5. What aircraft will I be flying in? New seats or old? (submitted by kchika)(thanks to ernestnywang for editing)
Ans: You can check your aircraft that you will be flying in on the cathaypacific.com website by using/checking schedules. Cathay Pacific's Aircraft are as follows

330- This version of the airbus has the old regional business (or NRBC?) and old economy seats
Airbus 340

34C- This version of the airbus has the old long-haul first, business, and economy seats
34D- This version of the airbus has the old long-haul business and economy seats

32P- The Airbus 320 has the old business and economy seats. No PTV available
Others
EQV-also stands for equipment varies aka the aircraft used changes often. sorry can't help to tell you what you're going to be on!

Seating charts for all aircraft can be found at seatguru.com

6. What are the baggage allowances for CX flights? (submitted by QRC3288)

Ans: CX checked baggage allowance for general flights:
First: 40kg (88lbs)
Business: 30kg (66lbs)
Economy: 20kg (44lbs)
Infant: 10kg (22lbs)

CX checked baggage allowance for flights to the Americas:
First: 32kg (70lbs) per bag, max of 2 bags
Business: 32kg (70lbs) per bag, max of 2 bags
Economy: 23kg (50lbs) per bag, max of 2 bags
Infant: 23kg (50lbs) per bag, max of 1 bag

7. What are the differences between The Pier and The Wing? (submitted by QRC3288)
Ans: The Pier and The Wing are CX's lounges located at HK International airport. Both lounges are divided into Business Class and First Class Sections.

Business class lounge is for:
First and Business Class passengers
Silver, Gold and Diamond Card members
Cargo Clan Elite members
oneworld Emerald & Sapphire members

First class lounge is for:
First Class passengers
Diamond Card members
OneWorld Emerald members

The Wing is located near Gates 1-3, open from 5:30 am to the last departure, above the boarding level. The Pier is located at Gate 62-66, open from 6:00am to 11:30 pm, below the boarding gates . Both lounges offer food, drinks, showers, reading materials, internet, comfortable seating, etc. However, the Wing does feature a long bar which is not available at the Pier.

There is also a lounge called the Arrival, for First Class passengers, Gold and Diamond Card members, and OneWorld Emerald members who are travelling on CX/KA on that day. The lounge offers showers, food, TV, internet, etc. It is located between Terminal 1 and 2, and is open from 5am to midnight.

8. What are the fare classes for Cathay Pacific Flights, and what are the restrictions? (submitted by QRC3288)
Anyone want to answer this one? I don't have the time to list them all and explain them

9. What are the LAG rules for Cathay Pacific?
Ans: In general, all passengers with no further connecting flights can buy LAGs from duty free after the LAG check. However, passengers to Australia and USA are subjected to a second check at the boarding gate for LAGs, and therefore cannot buy LAGs of more than 100mL.

For transit passengers, check http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...agrestrictions as there are too many separate restrictions! =)

Note: I don't know everything, so if there's mistakes in these answers, please tell me!!!

I can see you have spent a lot of time for all of us.
Thanks a lot from Bayako

Regarding Q4, could you please help to add how/when the mileage is reset to "0" when you reach each status e.g. when Silver--> Gold, your Club Miles are reset to "0"

kchika Feb 4, 2009 7:18 pm

Here is an excellent explanation of qualifying for elite status on Marco Polo Club, courtesy of cxfan1960. ^

The reason CT disappeared was because someone hacked into it and erased everything - along with everything in the database.

CT had a great FAQ compiled effortlessly and painstainkingly by B-HXB, but unfortunately the original information was not saved so there is nothing left.

================================================== ===

Update 08Feb: Thanks to the efforts of b-hqb who found an archived copy of CathayTalk's original FAQ, we have something to work by. B-HXB has started the initiative.

A new FAQ can be found here : http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...xperience.html

If you send me more information, I will cut, paste and merge/move posts to update the FAQ properly. You may also post the information here but send me a PM that you have done so and eventually I will move it along...

The Arrival is located in the passageway between Terminals 1 and 2 (landside). It is a very small lounge and was subject to space constraints during construction. Accordingly, there is limited entry.

The only passengers entitled to use The Arrival are First Class and oneworld sapphire or emerald passengers arriving off a Cathay Pacific or Dragonair flight. Business Class passengers who are not also oneworld sapphire or emerald equivalent do not have entry rights for The Arrival.

Only First Class passengers, Gold or above members of The Marco Polo Club and oneworld Emerald passengers are allowed in The Arrival.

cxfan1960 Feb 8, 2009 10:55 am

Yes!! Many thanks to B-HXB.

Besides 8.4 as mentioned by kchika, there are a few others:

7.1 CX management staff on travel duty is not really considered op-up, as they simply travel in the cabin they are entitled to.

9.9 While there is no additional benefits published externally, we heard about the following for DMP:
* Spousal DM
* Access to F lounges even when departing on non-OW flights.

ernestnywang Feb 12, 2009 4:28 pm

Dear B-HXB
I'm wondering if you can add more KA info into the FAQ, since KA is in fact a part of CX now, and many people on this forum travel on KA, too!

Regarding 1.2, here is my suggested addition
Code Operates First Class Business Class Economy Class
33R Dragonair Yes w/ PTV Old w/o PTV PTV
33A Dragonair - Old w/ PTV PTV
33L Dragonair - New w/ PTV PTV
321 Dragonair - Old w/o PTV No PTV
32P Dragonair - Old w/o PTV No PTV

Regarding 1.3, a person doesn't have to be an MPO member to view his / her itinerary on www.cathaypacific.com, as AM members can, too

Regarding 2, 3, 4, & 5, is there anyone here who is familiar enough with KA to do it? I don't know about KA that much.

Regarding 5.5, I think you forgot to add 77A, who's Exit Row seats are 31ABC, 31HJK.
Also, for KA's 33R, they are 35AC, 35HK; for KA's 33A & 33L, they are 40AC, 40HK; for KA's 321, they are 35ABC, 35HJK; for KA's 32P, they are 29ABC, 29HJK (non-reclinable) & 30ABC, 30HJK (reclinable).
I don't know what are the "good seats" for KA's F & J, though

ty97 Feb 13, 2009 1:01 pm

Just wanted to let you all know that the FAQ saved a new thread being created :)

I came to the forum to ask how I could log in to view my itinerary, even though I'm not a Marco Polo/Asia Miles member, because I wanted to change my seats on-line. A very quick perusal of the (well-organized) FAQ and I learned that it wasn't possible to login without a MP/AM number, but that it didn't matter anyway, since I can't change seats on-line.

So, thanks for the helpful FAQ! (And for saving a thread!).

Now to go read the FAQ about the CX fleet....

Is this information not readily available on the CX webpages? It seems rather pointless simply to duplicate them here.

Exactly, I think what will be better is to list out the pros/cons or any other notes (eg use of other alternate Oneworld lounges when it is better eg. in NRT).

Thanks. But people tend to come here looking for their answers instead of where they should be looking at CX's website.

Anyway, I'd just like a consensus to see whether its feasible to have the lounge info here. The original CX lounge info was uplifted from CathayTalk's archives.

CX FAQ PC/WiFi availability in CX Lounge

We had better have more information in Internet access section of FAQ

For example.

ICN
PC: 7 PCs
WiFi Access: Free/ESSID and Encryption Key available at reception desk.
Free wired Access available at PC desks.

NRT
PC: 8 PCs

HiWasabi Tofu ! The reason it has not been updated is because - we don't know. That is why this thread is here - for people to let us know so that we can update the info!

A340-300 fleet (15 aircraft | 34B has the Olympus seats)
34B – 1 aircraft (HXC)

Currently being retrofitted into 34B: 1 aircraft (HXG)
An update. As the first CX aircraft with oneworld livery, B-HXG has already come out of the retrofit and is now in service. ^

Actually doesn't look that bad. IMO, OW blue and CX green don't really go together that well, though. OTOH, this looks much better than the pix of the OW BA 744 I've seen.

economy seating info

If I can chime in as a long-time lurker who finds info on IFE-box-legroom-invasion especially useful: Based on recent experience, section 5.4 is accurate for non-reconfigured 330s. But on a 33B, E and F in the middle block seem to have the box instead of D and G. Also, in this case the box appears to be a lower "bottom" on the seat in front, instead of an actual box that takes up one side of the leg space. Not sure about the side seat pairs.

Thanks. As the 33B is a relatively new aircraft type we haven't had much feedback on it. I'll be sure to add this info in my next update.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, in particular re adding a section on Dragonair. I am beavering away on that when I have the time and hope to have it go live shortly.

Meanwhile the FAQs (destinations section) have been updated to reflect the capacity reductions that CX announced today.
