Downgrade Compensation

Was downgraded today HKG-BKK from F to J due to an equipment change from a 3 class plane to a 2 class plane.

Was obviously not at all happy. Was given HK$1500 as compensation (this was an AA mileage ticket). Just wonder what people think about this. Was the compensation fair? Personally I think it is very little for a downgrade to J, but then again, it is a short flight.

FYI - F was not available on Thai (or anyone else). They offered to let me fly F the following morning but I would have to pay my own hotel - as they were offering a seat in J the day before....

this sounds quite low to me. I'm not sure the fare difference of F vs. J one-way HKG-BKK ?

because, I have been downgraded at least a few times a year on HKG-TPE v.v. because of equipment change, and no matter what tickets I hold (full F, RTW A, etc), I got the full-fare F vs. J difference (~HKD 500+) and an additional goodwill payment of HKD 500, amounting to HKD 1,000+. so it sounds to me this payment is independent of the fare paid - I think mileage tickets are supposed to get the same ?

is HKG-BKK F vs. J just a few hundred HKD more than HKG-TPE F vs. J ?

The fare difference for F vs J is around USD 120, or HKD 930. I think HKD 1500 is more than fair. @:-)

oh then it sounds about right...similar to what I have been getting consistently for HKG-TPE v.v. fare difference between F and J + HKD 500 goodwill payment.

i was wondering why anyone would even bother booking F class on such a short route... J is already really too much for this flight..

Many people (including myself) do not care much about F or J for such a short trip, but some do. F/J is still more comfortable. In other cases, the F/J passengers are on multi-segment F/J tickets already, and these short flights are only parts of the tickets.

I would prefer an upgrade voucher to HKD1500.

is an upgrade voucher an option I can ask for, instead of the cash ? I have always been offered the cash and no other options...

(e.g. they wouldn't even ask me to wait another 1.5 hours for a flight with F, they probably realize too these flights are too short for F vs. J to have a real big difference...)

Unless I got my memory mixed up, I remember they passed out upgrade voucher plus some small compensation for involunteered downgrade, but that may be for long haul and overbooked F/J flights.

In an ICN-HKG flight a year ago, J was overbooked and three J passengers were downgraded. The passenger behind me was downgraded. He was a QF Plat. He took the downgrade offer voluntarily, and got an upgrade to F on his HKG-MEL connection.
