Need help getting seat assignment

My friend is flying to Hong Kong on AA/JAL and no problem with seat assignment but when transferring to Cathay to PEK(DragonAir), no seat assignment was possible according to AA. She is not member of Asia Miles (only AAdvantage). She is traveling with her mother and they would like to sit together.

What class is she travelling in? F/J pax can always get ASR, but most Y pax cannot.

F on AA/JAL but Y on Cathay. Must they get airport seat assignments?

With e-ticket (which I presume), you can do OLCI 48 hours ahead.

what booking class in Y on KA ? if I remember right full-fare Y/B can definitely get ASR (advance seat reservation). if it's a lower booking class, then it depends - I have read here some agents are willing to and can make the ASR, but officially it's no. (unless one of them has oneworld status - then I think ASR is possible for most if not all booking classes)

For booking classes other than Y and B, 20% of the cabin are available for ASR for non status pax. e.g. on a 744, these 20% are rows 30-34, 38, 45-46, 56-57 and 66-68

She is Advantage Gold and booked coach in Y fare bucket. Is there a good number to call Cathay? Phone system was difficult to navigate.

AAdvantage Gold is equal to oneworld Ruby, so she should be able to get ASR. You can just call up their centralized US reservations number. I don't know it off-hand, but it is on their website under "contact us" at the very bottom of the homepage.

Are there advance time limits for seat assignments on CX? I am thinking I would want to book seats for the two of us sooner rather than later (D fare class e-ticket, CX 897 as AA6079 SFO-HKG and CX 111 HKG-SYD, in October, both oneworld Emerald.)

TIA!

I think you mean CX, and not QF. CX starts assigning seats 180 days before departure.

I am still trying to train my fingers, but they have minds of their own. Thanks, yes, I did mean CX, as I will fly CX to HKG and on to SYD, not QF. I will call to book seats.
