Transit question

i will not be flying CX but since this is a HKG question i hope its okay to post here. i will be flying CO from ewr-hkg and then cathay pacific from HKG-MNL. i have been told by CO that they cannot transfer my bags and that i must clear immigration, get my bags and re check in. is this possible to do in 2 hours? i arrive 7:55 and leave at 9:55

It can certainly be done with time to spare in 2 hours. As you exit into the arrivals hall, simply take the escalator or the elevator up to the departures level. CO normally has one of the closer gates.

It will probably take you less than 20 minutes from the gate to the check in counter. You will be back airside within the hour. Everything is signposted very clearly and you will have no trouble finding your way around. HKG is a very efficient airport.

usually you will be out before your luggage, especially if you are a visitor(rather than a permanant resident), but that wouldnt take long either. Unless you look terribly scruffy, the customs wont stop you anyway. I've never seen anyone who took more than 45 mins from airside immigration to arrival hall lately...
I'm not sure, but maybe the transfer connection desk could help? anyone?

I have stayed airside at HKG coming off a QF flight onto a CZ flight. I used the transfers desk and they sent someone to collect my bags. You can't get your BP until they have your bags and you have confirmed they are yours.

You'll be fine. It is very rare at HKG that you and your bags aren't at the carousel with 30 mins of landing. Minimum check-in time for CX is 40 minutes.

I am really rather surprised that CO won't check the bags through for you though. Did they offer any explanation?

First, check with CO again - they should be able to check your bags to the final destination. I was allways able to do that - even with different airlines and different tickets.

If you still cannot, immigration sometimes has long lines in HKG - but even then it should not take more than 40 min (this was my worst case) to get thru - usually it is just 5 to 10.
Also check: there are two immigration areas, one left and one right, around a 2 min walk between the areas. It does not matter which one you use - they both end up in the same baggage hall - and sometimes lines on one side are significantly shorter.
If it takes long to go thru immigration your luggage should be waiting for you. There is never a line at customs - walk thru / green channel as you see it in Europe. They rarely stop anybody - and usually they stop only people who look local.

HKG is well organized, very well posted and one of the easiest airports. So 2 hours should be plenty of time.

I've actually done what the OP needs to do... and I can definitely say within 2 hours, you have enough to easily do to customs/collection/redeposit and also have enough time to do some duty free shopping and picture taking airside ....

Yes - it's all very obvious - you just get the lifts (elevators in American) up one level to departures.

You said that you're not flying Cathay Pacific and yet you say that you are. In your other post here you did say that you are travelling on Cebu Pacific and not on Cathay Pacific.

So, this thread is inappropriate here as it is not specific to CX even though it is to HKG airport. People wanting to answer OP's question please refer to other thread.
