Op-Up... is it possible on CX?
Hi everyone,
i'll travel at the beginning of Aug MIL-LHR-HKG-DPS r/t in Business class.
I usually fly SQ and so op-up are unknown for me.
Is there any possibility with CX? Which is the best way to obtain it? Ask kindly for it?
thanks for any hints.
Cheers.
Luke

Had it happen to me twice without asking from C to F. Once I was alone and once I was travelling with my wife and kids. My wife and I were in C and my kids were in Y. My wife and I were upgraded to F. My kids were pretty aggrieved that they weren't selected to take our place in C!
Was also offered an upgrade on my birthday but turned it down as I was travelling with someone else.

Without status on OneWorld you are fairly low on the priority list for op-ups. But they are certainly happening quite a lot for top-tier CX FFs at the moemnt since load factors are high. I'm at about 50% op-ups for the flights I've taken in-region in Y this year.

With status on OneWorld, I have been an op-up recipient on CX about 20% of my flights for 2005, from business to first. I can specifically recall the following legs:
YVR-HKG
LAX-HKG
ICN-TPE
Every time they make this change, they note that I have status with OneWorld that they are recognizing.

If you fly the nonstop, then there are basically no J to F Op Ups because of the limited number of seats and full F fare demand. There are almost no FF mile awards on the non stop either.
Fly through LAX and I think that you will find your success rate goes WAY up.

Thanks, 3MMer. Totally makes sense as there are only 8 F seats on the A340. I actually cashed in FF miles for the next trip and only managed to get an F seat on the JKF-YVR-HKG flight. I will try this flight on my next paid trip (crossing fingers).

I have only AA status, so I guess I am getting lucky.
YVR-HKG seems to happen because they filled the J seats in New York, and so they bump me up to first.
ICN-TPE just because they like my face - the airplane wasn't full.
LAX-HKG appears to be because J is full.

As MPC members know, only Diamond members score OP-Ups higher than any other Oneworld Emerald members. But I've sat in Y on two long haul flights in the past already , so it's never certain. And I've received two double Op-Up's before too.. but those are indeed rare occasions.
