Re-checkin question

Hi - new to post on the CX board.
I have an itinerary from HKG - ICN - HKG - AKL on one PNR.
Here is my issue: HKG - ICN - HKG is a same-day return, and there is a 22-hour layover in HKG before HKG - AKL.
I have no bags to check from HKG-ICN-HKG, but have bags from HKG - AKL.
The phone hotline agent, after much struggle, said when I check in from ICN-HKG-AKL (one ticket), I will be issued both boarding passes, and my bags will be checked through from ICN-HKG.
I keep on saying I do not want to get all the bags from HKG to ICN and wait for ICN check in to open, and I will have no bags when I am back to HKG.
He suggested that, if I have no bags to check in from ICN - AKL (via HKG) at ICN, I can go to HKIA to "recheck-in" and utilise my unused baggage quota.
Has another tried this? And is there anything to watch out for? Many thanks

I flew MNL - HKG - LHR earlier in the year. The transit in Hong Kong also involved an overnight stay in Hong Kong. I had no trouble checking in a small bag in MNL, collecting it in HKG and rechecking a larger bag in HKG the next day.

May I ask if your layover was more than 24 hours?
I do not want to want to carry any bags with me on my same day from HKG - ICN - HKG
the agent had difficulties understanding what I was trying to do
but at the end said re-checkin is an option
so did you have your bag from the first leg?

You can definitely check bags during your layover in HK.

many thanks, boybi
it worries me since the agent on the phone did not know what to do or gave me any convincing answers.
I hope the check in agents at HKIA will not cause any additional excitments.

ditto
if you have a ticket for XXX-HKG-YYY, of course you are entitled to use whatever portion of check in baggage you haven't used and check in another/some extra bag(s) at HKG

It was around 20 hours layover. I arrived in Hong Kong at 3:05 PM on a Monday and departed from Hong Kong to London at 11:05 AM the next day. I had a smaller bag for my first leg which I collected in Hong Kong and then checked in a completely different bag the next day.

Absolutely no issue in checking in bags at an intermediate port along your journey. Have done it countless times with a number of airlines, including CX.

I am going to have a similar situation soon.
Using your example, suppose you can have two checked bags and checked one from ICN to HKG and retrieved your checked bag at HKG. Can you still check two bags when you leave HKG for AKL?

Are they separate PNRs? How long is the layover?

If its separate PNR, youll have to retrieve your bag first anyways. You wont have a problem re-checking two bags at the counter.

If its same PNR, it really depends on how long your layover is.

any updates on this?

I'm doing XXX-HKG-YYY (same ticket/same pnr/both legs CX), and the layover in hkg is 9 hours overnight. on both phone and whatsapp i'm trying to get an answer.

On WA they're clueless and can't even understand what i'm asking. Instead they state- you're not allowed to leave the airport, if you do, it's up to the airport discretion. ...? if i'm leaving the airport, i obviously am assuming i have the right to enter said country (i do), so this advice is just wrong. Then they stated that if i have a layover, and i try to do this, then i'd have to get rebooked, likely will be a fee. I don't think this is correct.

On the phone- they also couldn't comprehend what i'm trying to do. I suggest they call the HKIA check in desk (i don't have a number so can't call)- they said they can't do that.

So i'm just going to wing it. It's unfathomable to me that any airline would have an issue with this- what if i were at a long layover and went shopping outside of the airport, and came back with a new suitcase, they'd not honor it? =???

As long as you have proper documents to enter HK, you can always exit the airport and do whatever you want outside of HK. You can always add additional checked bags as long as your baggage allowance isn’t used up.

If you already have your onward BP, CX won’t even know (and won’t care) you left leave the airport.
