This is great news for me, as I won't have to travel all the way to Manila to catch CX flights!

I wonder when will bookings for CRK flights be open.

CRK can get a lot passengers from mainland gamblers.

They belong on direct cheapy direct flights or HK Express. Angeles is seedy, populated by retired folk on basic pensions looking for the the lowest cost beer and by the Korean equivalent of the Costa Packet bucket and spade brigade. Cathay does not price for any of them although it seems to want to match Cebu Pacific's cost of service, buying a monster fleet of A321s instead of quality state of the art widebody craft. Big gamblers with thick wallets head to the new casinos on Manila Bay.

The airport is 13K from the small city of Angeles which is not at all the focus of the airport, Cathay or the other major international airlines (Qatar Emirates Eva Scoot Air Asia Starlux Asiana etc etc) along with Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific that now use the airport and it sizable new terminal.
The airport has large highly populated catchment area apart from Manila which ensured that Cathay enjoyed full loading and added a second daily flight to HK.
Flight to HK take normally about 1 hour 20 minutes and seem not to require ether wide body aircraft or lie-flat seats.

The route is highly patronised by Philippines who work in HK and particularly the 180,000 or so registered and contracted housekeepers (helpers) employed in HK.
CX offers this group special lower cost fares.

Ron, let's deploy some of our scare resources to Clark where we can attract a bunch of maids with our special low fares. Good idea Lav, that might enable us to switch another of our Manila flights from an A330 to an A321, thereby further reducing the quantity of our premium cabin capacity and providing additional manpower savings. Better still, I wonder if I can get HK Express to wet lease us one of their economy only craft. I'll just nip along to Merlin and see if he thinks it's a wizard idea.

"a bunch of maids"
What a horrible post - you should be ashamed Tom Young

Deeming in the extreme to these hard working ladies who work so hard away from their families to keep the wheels turning for thousands of Hong Kong families
BTW Cathay have been offering these fares for at least the past 30 years at the initial request of the Philippine government

he’s got a point though - Cathay is on a long path to recovery and is currently significantly lacking manpower and tight with aircraft. Why should CX serve a destination which sounds more feasible with LCCs?

maybe this route can come in 2026-2027, when CX has more planes (new wide body, 777X and 321neo) to spare and more crew recruited.

I'm with you on this - those were the Clark flights that were full pre-Covid. All they need to do is offer "free golf-bag" in the luggage allowance which will complete the picture that a certain type of gweilo presents to their wife about these weekend trips. The golf bags rarely get opened.

(I was previously married to a Filipina from within the Clark catchment area, so I know that of which I speak.)

CX spent alot of money to buy UO, because, not surprisingly, there are some routes/ market segments that are better served by an LCC model. Clark would seem to be one of those markets.

Cathay is not 'tight with aircraft" rather it is being forced to use and refit older aircraft (as are many large airlines) due to the late delivery of replacements -there are 64 on order and 19 still long term parked . Manpower directly effecting flight operations is a fast declining problem now that pilot numbers are increasing again by the week (this from a senior CX check captain friend)

I am not sure why this is so offensive to you? I don't think Tom Young is actually saying anything bad about Maids... just that he suspects this route would attract a higher proportion of maids versus other routes in the network and therefore equate to much lower fare price, so he was mocking CX for how they might choose this route resumption over another.

CRK is just a short hop from HKG and can efficiently utilize aircraft between longer flights.
