Maybe they can allow their out port based crew to do some flights since they are not affected by this law as they head back to their own base. Probably like
BKK - HKG - FRA - HKG - BKK
SIN - HKG - AMS - HKG - SIN
LON - HKG - KUL - HKG - LON
not sure if this is feasible for CX.

if i was CX employee, who just got bullied to loosing both my education and housing allowance and 50pct cut to my take home pay, and now just been told to take 14day quarantine, UNPAID, away from family, i would simply leave the firm or hk or both.

there is complacency amongst govt and cx management "where can these ppl go". even if cx doesnt stop flying now, uptick in the industryy will see ppl leave CX

It might work for BKK based crew but even that would be dangerously close to the flight duty period limit when flying one short haul and one long haul continuously. The HKCAD limit is 18h15m when the duty contains 2 sectors with minimum 4.5hrs rest in a bunk. Adding an hour for reporting time before the first flight and the ground time needed in HKG 18 hours isn't a lot. From SIN it's like 5 hours passed already upon landing in HKG.

Not to mention the crew would be literally exhausted towards the end and that affect safety and service.

There was reports that CX is working on a 21 days closed loop working schedule. (Ie crew will work during these 21 day period), then back to 14 days quarantine n then 14 days off.

Not sure how they planned this ? Crew will turn around in HKG instead ? Or they book the airport hotel for temp stay?

CableTV says 21 day roster "like a sailor" and they will stay in HK quarantine hotel between duty, not allowed to return home. "Voluntary measure"

How is stuff meant to get here while we wait for jabs? Drones?

I think now people can understand why Qantas has no and will not start regular long haul international flights. CX will be the next.

It seems that the government realized how destructive to put all crews under hotel-quaratine:

食物及衞生局回覆東網表示,正與運輸及房屋局討論加強機組人員的管制,包括收緊須離開機場範圍進入社區的機 組人員的自我隔離要求,以及增加抵港後強制檢測的次數,以盡量減低輸入個案傳入社區的風險,正式推行時間有 待落實。
It says that the government is still negotiating on tightening self-quaratine rules and conducting more virus tests and still undecide on this issue. No mention about put all of them under hotel-quaratine.

On the surface that would be a great idea but I believe from a contact that the Pilots based in Europe, Australia and North America have all been stood down on furlough since last year and therefore haven't been kept current and valid (perhaps a massive oversight) and therefore require training to get back up to speed, my understanding is that would be in Hong Kong and hence won't work because of travel restrictions and quarantine requirements! It would be the same story for the outport based flight attendants, what a shame because it would have been a massive mitigation strategy!

Well, it could also due to the HK based unions have an agreement that forbids outport bases FAs from doing cross-based flying. However it seems that the 3 year agreement seemed to have expired as of 2021. The union was trying to fight for the same agreement on one of its agenda if I'm not wrong but was denied.

Shall we expect that there will be significant schedule change in the next few weeks in light of the crew quarantine requirements?

highly possible but i have not cared at all because i am not travelling.i think impact on passenger is minimal. just like how hotel quarantine is upped to 21days, this is just another govt measures to stop travel and shut tight the border

Fly Me To The Moon Feb 6, 2021 9:50 am

I hope my return flight YVR-HKG on 26 Feb is not affected (i.e. not cancelled). CX is not operating that many YVR-HKG flights that week already. :(

We should expect many longhaul cancellations (fewer regional). I suggest that you stand ready to have to alter your travel plans.
Once the plan is official, I assume that CX will quickly release a revised flight schedule.
