CX Restructuring and New Job Cuts

A few news outlets reporting of new rounds of job cuts at CX, mostly overseas and affecting sales, marketing, cargo and other departments.

Bloomberg - Cathay Plans Job Cuts Overseas Amid Competition from China Rivals
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ions-post-says

SCMP - Cathay Pacific looks set to cut overseas jobs as internal memo tells staff to prepare for restructuring
https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...-jobs-internal

Not really surprising news. IMO, marks further demise of CX and adds weight to argument that CX's glory days won't come back any time soon, if at all.

I wonder if we're going to see the end of foreign based crews in the next few years.

Was that really in doubt? The trend for most airlines has been pretty clear. CX evaded for longer than many, but they are not immune to market forces and competition.

CX should make Asian crew bases...like MNL and BKK...get more Pan-Asian talent to supplement the local hires.

Thanks for sharing. I personally find CX proactive and helpful in these situations. Certainly relative to many other airlines. I can't speak for CX operations in the USA however.

Somewhat related - KHH downtown ticket counter will be closed later this month. TPE downtown ticket counter was already closed a couple of years ago.

Yes. My experience is based upon HKG, MNL and MEL.

CX has begun letting go of staff at outports since September. MNL/CEB were affected, I heard in TPE, town office staff were transferred to the airport. Not sure for other outports.

The author has a follow up article including how CX reacted to the incident in MNL with the the Xiamen Airlines.

What the author failed to understand is that airlines were dependent on Airport management announcements. So the airline cannot make immediate announcements when the airport will reopen and when flights will be able to depart. The author also wanted the check in staff to do the rebooking but I don't think the author understands that computers at check in counters cannot be used to rebook, they are on a different system.
