Question upgrade waitlist confusion... help!

Need some help here please

Have asked for an upgrade from PY to J on a return flight from HKG-BCN. MP agent told me that the return is already confirmed, but the outbound is waitlisted. He also said that the ticketing would be held off until the 30th of June. My understanding is that this upgrade would 'cost' 30000 miles as a return.

If the waitlist is not becoming available at the time of ticketing the upgrade would be 20000 (as its one way).
In this case I would rather upgrade one way from BCN-HKG-PEK, instead of only to HKG of course. (ticket is PEK-HKG-BCN return).

Here is what I dont understand:

1. at what miles will the upgrade be charged? (miles required will change after 22nd of June, right!?)
2. what happens at the airport in HKG outbound, if there are seats in J, and I am still waitlisted? (but already ticketed on the return from BCN to HKG)
(2a. If I can get an upgrade at the airport, how would it be charged?!)
3. If I cannot get a seat in J at check-in in HKG, how can I ensure I am using the 20000 miles to get the upgrade from BCN-HKG-PEK instead of only BCN-HKG?
4. would it make sense to call MP again, and ask them to issue the upgrade before the 22nd (possibly avoiding higher millage requirements)?!

Sorry, but this is giving me quite a bit of headache, as different people tell me different things.

thanks

Today up to 6.22 - 20k one way, 30k round trip (if ticketed at once.) Doesn't matter if PEK-BCN or HKG-BCN (or BCN-HKG vs BCN-PEK)
After 6.22 - 25k one way, 50k round trip. No refund if BCN-HKG and HKG-PEK / PEK-HKG and HKG-BCN clears separately (ie in such cases it costs more than 25/50 - 12k for PEK-HKG plus 25k for HKG-BCN.)

2. what happens at the airport in HKG outbound, if there are seats in J, and I am still waitlisted?

Instant upgrade - 20k pre-622, 25k post-622.

3. If I cannot get a seat in J at checking in HKG, how can I ensure I am using the 20000 miles to get the upgrade from BCN-HKG-PEK instead of only BCN-HKG?
You should request it now and see if there is a space for HKG-PEK, since the mileage requirements do not differ.

Yes but if there is no space showing online, they cannot do anything, unless if you are DM.

Exclamation still in the dark

Thanks G-CIVC, much appreciate your detailed answers. Unfortuantely I am still in the dark as to what happens when I request the upgrade now - with inbound confirmed, and the outbound waitlisted. Is my understanding below correct?

Requesting it now (before 22nd), I would be billed 30k miles for that (HKG-BCN return). If the waitlist doesnt open, I will get 10000 refunded, as the return would then be a one-way upgrade only.

Plus:
If the wailist doesnt open, but a seat is available at the airport, it will be given to me, but I am not getting any refund?
or
It will be given to me, I will pay another 20k miles instant upgrade (and receive a refund of 10k from the previous upgrade booking)?

I find this whole issue incredibly confusing, and even MP (who I just called again) cannot give me a clear answer!

Anyone able to explain this please. Obviously I am not interesteed in wasting mile on some technicality. And If I cannot get the outbound upgrade, then I might of course get a inbound upgrade from BCN all the way to PEK for the same miles instead of only to HKG.

thanks
