Award Availability

Hey gang, I was looking for a really noob quick question thread but didn't find one, feel free to move this.

I'm just wondering what J award availability is like for JNB flights? I recently flew intra asia on CX/KA in J awards and those were pretty easy to find. But I'm looking for an award in Feb to or from JNB/CPT (I don't think they fly CPT at that time of year) and I can't seem to find anything above Premium Econ. I wouldn't mind flying Premium Economy, but obviously I'd rather fly J. If the space is just rarely available I might just save these AS miles for something else, but I figured I'd ask you guys if I was barking up the wrong tree or if I just needed to wait, I figured 9 months out (and I've been looking for 10) was gonna be easy, but not so much.

I'm looking in Feb, either direction is ok because I'm gonna use miles for the other direction, and I'm using AS miles if that makes a difference, not sure if Marco Polo members get better availability or something like Singapore does.

Was in the same position a few months ago- looking for HKG-JNB. Snagged one of two J award seats available for the whole of August/Sept, and then had no luck calling in every other day for two weeks to see if I can change to a later date.

Multiple phone agents told me CX availability is easier to find close-in. Not sure I would count on that however.

How does waitlist work? Is it based on status?
