Yes, catering reductions are well documented in another thread on FT. CX F used to be my preferred ride on my 6 per year commute BOS/HKG roundtrip. Now I fly CX occasionally, and rely on QR J for my regular commute.

Have you tried EK F from Boston instead? EK F is lovely and have switched a chunk of my business to them. The bed isn't as good as CX, unfortunately. But I bring my own pillow which helps, and the F&B just blows CX out of the water. Service consistency on EK F is also better IMO. I used to care less about F&B. But over time I have found I really appreciate a large menu, good wine, and plenty of items stocked (it's absurd how low CX stocks F catering, especially the Chinese option). CX's menu is just unchanged for years, the options keep getting cut or reduced, some of the (few) mains they offer are obviously from J class just replated, and booze sucks. Horray they have Krug to make the bloggers happy. But unfortunately their wine list sucks for anyone who cares beyond googling the price, which is clearly the extent of the bloggers' wine knowledge. I don't even like to drink much on board, but I like having options and a few tipples of this and that to pair with my food.
Rant over, but for the purpose of this thread: if you do the Tokyo F flights, the ex-HKG sector literally does not have any non-breakfast food! I was even inquiring about some chips or salty snacks or something on a previous flight, but no dice. Nada. Nothing except the pretty limited menu options you know cereal, a fruit plate, and a choice of 2 or 3 mains (and, bizarrely as pointed out above, no Japanese main!). So to christep's point above, it is a little bit moot since there are only breakfast options and it's rather limited. Basically re-plated J options. The return sector is better for catering but still has been cut over the years.

Have to agree with this. Used to always book CX F if possible. Now, don't waste the extra miles and just book CX J. If buying a revenue ticket, it's QR J.
