Help with booking please. Using $500 US MCO.
I have a $500 US voucher from CX. I would like to use this on a CX booking. Prefer SFO to HKG and back sometime early next year. Can I get a reasonable fare? What fare basis would I need to earn points and put them into my AA account towards status? Do I need a specific fare to upgrade? I assume I will need to establish a CX mileage account and have points put in from let us say Starwood. How many points for Y to C upgrade each way? Any help you can give is much appreciated. I did a search and early January 2004 is expensive on cx.com. I realize Chinese New Years is around. Thanks

Try:
http://www.cathay-usa.com/freqfly/aadvantagemiles.asp
Or try aa.com -> AAdvantage -> Partners and Mileage Programs -> Airlines > Cathay Pacific.
And also (listed below) from: http://www.cathay-usa.com/freqfly/aadvantageaward.asp
Effective August 1, 2003, Cathay Pacific AAdvantage upgrade awards will be discontinued. Members must ticket all upgrade award bookings on or before July 31, 2003 and for all tickets using a Cathay Pacific AAdvantage upgrade, all travel must be completed by December 31, 2003.

If I understand correctly you wish to earn AAmiles on the base economy fare, but use AsiaMiles to upgrade to Business.
You can earn AAdvantage points on fare basis Y, B, H.
To upgrade using AsiaMiles you need one of the fare bases YBHKLMS. This also being the bases on which you would earn AsiaMiles.
The cost of an upgrade SFO-HKG is 35,000 AsiaMiles one-way or 60,000 roundtrip. An award business class ticket would be 120,000 AsiaMiles.
You can transfer Starwood points 1:1 to AsiaMiles.

The biggest problem you might encounter is that AA will see the upgrade as an award since both awards and upgrades are booked in U class for Business Class. So you will have to photocopy proof of the upgrade plus all relevant copies of ticket, boarding pass, MCO etc.

Thank you. Can someone please advise on a "decent" fare total I should be looking for based upon this scenario. A upgradeable CX fare from SFO to HKG, use of AsiaMiles to upgrade and desire to get miles onto my AA account. A ballpark please. Can someone else with AsiaMiles upgrade my itin? Thanks

To answer the last question - yes anyone else with AsiaMiles can upgrade you. But you need to be on their redemption list and there are some time delays in arranging all of this (and a cost - US$25? - if they have already filled their list).
