got an answer for this?

I recently (08/12) enjoyed my first CX flight. I had a C-Class Ticket JNB-HKG-FRA. The check-in agent in JNB was quite friendly and attached first-class tags to my bags. He then said he had a surprise for me an handed my F Class boarding passes.

I was quite surprised as I am not a Oneworld member and 'only' had my LX account in the record. I was even more surprised after boarding had completed and there were still about 15 seats empty in C. Can anybody explain this?

One possible explanation: they had no or very few F customers and an overbooked Y cabin. The number of J/C revenue/award passengers was fewer or equal to the number of F seats open, so they moved all J/C passengers into F and filled J/C with overflow Ys. Trust you enjoyed the service.

BTW Can you tell us if they sent you to the BA Terraces Lounge at JNB or the SAA First Class Lounge?

BA Terraces Lounge, unfortunately, as the SAA F-Class Lounge in JNB is much, much nicer, but I enjoyed the free upgrade

When I started flying CX some years ago, I had just signed up for Asiamiles, not status at all, me and my companion were both upgraded on check-in and the flight attendant said she hoped we would get a "good impression of Cathay".
Well we did, and both have logged more than 500'000 miles since.

Does that explain things?

If you had a J class ticket, instead of "D", or "I"... then CX system was anticipating an overbooking situation and promoptly UG'd you due to your booking farebasis.

You really think that CX's load management is so flakey that they can still be predicting an oversell at check-in and then end up with 15 empty seats in J? I think not.

Did the flight(s) in question feature New Business Class?

OK. Then it's different from what I experienced at check-in the other day. I was on an aircraft with old business class. And they told me they wanted to upgrade me to first class because it was not with NBC. Since space was not available in F then, they then said we telexed HKG to upgrade you on your next flight (or to issue an upgrade voucher for your next flight -- I forgot exact wording). I was upgraded to business on my next flight. I was using an award Y ticket issued by a CX partner.

Funny you mention this - in all my years of flying CX and literally hundreds (if not more) of flights as a Invitation member I have only received 2 "space available" upgrades not due to overbooking - one was HKG -BKK when they launched the new J class seats and the other was JNB to HKG - never could figure out why as the flight was not full in any class - GUess JNB ground staff are just generous.

Thank you JNB! Keep it up!
