Part of my RTW is a daytime return trip from Hong Kong to Jakarta. Is it difficult in Jakarta to just get off the CX plane and then reboard. This pair of flights is for the miles only.

If it is 777 to 776, then you have nearly two hours. I think it will be doable.

I did a turnaround in June at CGK with LH for the Star 55,555 promotion. LH had even a tighter 'connection.'

After getting out of the plane, I went to the transit desk. They escorted me out of the passport control to the landside checkin area, checked me in and escorted me back to airside. I needed to pay a departure tax. Some people on the same flight went straight to passport control and did check-in themselves and they came back fine. I saw them in a lounge.

Why don't you do HKG-DPS? It's further than to CGK.

Best of all, why don't you do a ReturnCheck (a on-ground product of Cathay Pacific). This way, you can get your return boarding pass and all you need to do is go through the TRANSFER counter at CGK and reboard your CX flight to HKG.

The other option is for you to fly to DPS as Guy Betsy pointed out. It is further and the political climate in Bali is better than that of Jakarta.

ReturnCheck is availoable to CGK but not DPS it seems. Also the outbound immigration at DPS was a complete nightmare when I was ther around Easter time. All of the airlines were having to search round to find their passengers who had been standing in line for up to an hour and not yet through. It rather spoilt what had otherwise been an excellent break. The fact that outbound immigration is basically redundant anyway makes it even worse.

I forgot to say that I am flying in 1st, so CX 777/776 has 1st class while flights to DPS does not. I hope that the CX staff in HKG will give me my return boarding pass. By the way, how much is the departure tax? Payable in US dollars probably.

There's a currency exchange counter near the check-in. I just went there to get local currency while a return boarding pass was issued. I don't exactly remember how much I paid. Probably around 10USD. It was not high like at LHR or U.S airports.

Decided to bring this topic forward in light of the recent events in Bali. Does this still make sense to do, from a safety point of view. I am not flying this part of my trip until the end of Nov. If I change the routing, do you think there is a possibity that the itinerary change fee may be waived?

Given that this thread is 8 years old I thought it best to ask again.

I'm thinking of doing a TPE-HKG-CGK-HKG-TPE BA tier point run based on a CX weekend business saver sale (it's doable in one tough day). Are there any recent experiences with regards to getting both HKG - CGK - HKG boarding passes beforehand so as to do a transfer in CGK only? It saves a fair bit of immigration hassle and the departure tax.

Also, I noticed there are a mix of planes flying the above itinerary (744, 774, 777, 340 etc.) Are there any better choices with regards to seats or is it all regional business and not very interesting in any case?

I did it in August 09 - it meant going through the International Transit which is essentially just one bored looking guy with a basic scanner at the bottom of a flight of stairs up to the departure level. We were in the lounge within 15 minutes of getting off the plane and it's a fairly small terminal; mrs christep had time for a (paid) massage at the lounge before the return. We were (if I recall correctly) given the return boarding passes in HKG (either that or we had printed ones from online check-in).

However, you do need to enlist the assistance of a CX representative when you get off the plane, and they will take the money off you for the departure tax (~US$11 I think) which you can't avoid. They will take your boarding passes and passports and pay the tax and return them with the tax stamp on the BPs (again if I recall correctly they in fact cam back with fresh locally-printed BPs).

All 74A, 77A, 34B, 33B have long haul business. 777, 773, 330 have regional business.

Assuming you wanted to get out of the airport promptly, does CX have any kind of immigration fast track passes for F and/or J passengers at CGK?

yes, departure tax is IDR 150,000, as of a few weeks back. So far I only paid in local curreny. However for the visa on arrival (250,000 IDR or 25 USD) the also take USD, EUR and SGD. This is from personal experiance and observing other passengers pay.

I haven't laughed this hard for a LONG time
