This time I will have to fly economy from LAX-HKG #881 and return to SFO #872. Can anyone help me pick the absolute best coach seat? It's a long flight, so I'm trying to get nyself situated in the right spot.
Also, I'm leaving Sep.9 - ret. Sep.18. Both flight still are fairly empty. Is that normal for CX? Do they sell many seats in the last 2-3 weeks? If they don't many of us should be able to get rows of seats. That would be fantastic, but, I realize that could change quickly.

I guess I should tell you that they are 747-400 both ways, and they have the smaller business class. Economy starts with row 31, I believe. Also, allow me to ask another question. What if any chance to get upgraded, being AA Gold and becoming Plat on the way there? What if any strategy to use?

Unless the plane is full in economy then you have no chance whatsoever. If it is full then the following people will be ahead of you for upgrades:

Marco Polo Invitation, Diamond, Gold & Silver.
All other OneWorld Emerald & Sapphire members.

My guess is that there might be at least 20 of these on the flights you mention, so all in all I would say your chances are pretty much zero.
