Getting help for friends
I'm not sure whether or not it's worth writing MPC or not. A couple of my friends are flying HAN-HKG-LAX in July (in Y) and they have 2 small kids, so it's a tough flight. They are wait-listed on one segment, and I'm not sure if it would help if I wrote MPC to ask if they could "give them some consideration" or something like that to get them off the waiting list. Would they be likely to help??

Hi Commuter...
First things first. Who did your friends' booking? If they did through a travel agency, that travel agency is responsible for clearing the waitlist. They usually have 'priority' waitlist that have more or less the same status as MPC members.
You may write to MPC but the problem is that MPC will not give them the same status waitlist as you because they are not family and you are also not travelling with them.
It is the peak season now. Most flights are full and CX normally clears waitlists up to 2 weeks' prior to departure only.

They made the booking directly with the CX office in Hanoi, so there is no travel agent to help them. They purchased full-fare Y tickets, so I'm wondering if this will help them get priority????

Just a thought.
Would it work if you just reserve on the same segments, and declare that the person who is missing that one segment is your travel companion. then, after they are all confirmed, you cancel your own reservation.
Or just wait... just a thought.

Actually, no. It is a little too complicated for that...
CX would want a ticket number to cross reference your booking to theirs!
Commuter, how sure are you that the tickets are full Y? If they are booked in any other class other than Y, then they are some sort of discounted ticket. If they have full Y class, trust me, their reservation will be pushed through to the top of the waitlist without problems.
