Joining the FF scheme
Hi,
I'm from Sydney, Australia, and CX is HKG based. However, since if I join QF Frequent Flyer I can only earn points on CX on certain classes, which happen to be the more expensive economy fares and CX's service is so much better than QF (4 years ago anyway),
I was wondering whether it's worth joining OneWorld under the CX scheme? And are there restrictions on points earned on QF flights?
Thanks,
Clement

the very first thing that I could think of is...only full Y fares on QF earns you 100% miles in Asia Miles...other discounted economy fares (B/H/K/L/M/S) only earn you 50% of the actual flown miles...

and, as far as I remember, for all those fare classes on CX flights that earn you miles in Asia Miles, you earn points in QF's program too...i.e. the list of fare classes are the same for both programs, for CX flights...the only difference might be, for all these mileage earning fare classes (Y/B/H/K/L/M/S) on CX flights, you get 100% on Asia Miles...you might get only 70% for some of these subclasses in QF's program...but that would change (to all 100%) anyway later in the year (in September ?)...
do you happen to have a list of subclasses (on CX flights) that you won't earn QF points ? then we can compare...

you said "if I join QF Frequent Flyer I can only earn points on CX on certain classes, which happen to be the more expensive economy fares"...
I assume fare classes that are not in the list you mentioned would earn miles in QF's program...the "less expensive" economy fares won't earn you points in QF, but those won't earn you points in any other programs either, include Asia Miles...
if that's the case, QF's program is as good as CX's...the only question is, 70% vs 100%...and that would change to 100% in September anyway, right...

Thanks for your analysis tedhl. Very helpful. Yes, September will mean a change. To MILES
We work in kilometres here in Australia.
Only AN in that case gives one the opportunity to earn points in the cheapest fare classes...which might mean that I might join that boat.
Thanks anyway for your help.

Clement

Clement, you are absolutely right that Cathay has better service than Qantas both in the air and on the ground. No offence but Qantas is getting to be like United an AA in terms of service, though they aren't as bad (yet) Cathay's service is 10 times better with food, and general friendlness of crew.
As for earning miles and the program in general, I am also new to it having moved to Hong Kong recently but so far I have been satisfied with the treatment I have had minus a few long drawn phone calls with the staff.
