Upgrade with miles-varies

Hi all, I am planning to buy a HKG-LHR premium economy ticket on either CX or BA, then upgrade with asia miles to business (30000 miles very good deal). However, in the upgrade with miles row, it says 'varies', so what does it depend on and how can I find out if my ticket is upgradable or not?

Thanks in advance!!

You need to identify the underlying fare class. Ignore the text - it's basically fare rules for dummies. The fare class will be in parenthesis. W and R are upgradeable. E is not.

Unfortunately you may not find it is such a good deal after all, once E fares are excluded.

Even R fare, it may still be a good deal. Still cheaper than outright I fare I would think... though I've been told Europe is cheaper than us NA routes. I remember paying only $4k for RT I-fare ex-PVG whereas RT I-fare ex-HKG is $6k+...

One more question, I am now looking at TPE-LHR in premium economy, and I can find TPE-HKG-LHR-HKG-TPE in order of I-R-R-I, in terms of fare classes.

Is it possible to only upgrade the middle sectors involving HKG at the normal rate or do I have to upgrade the whole itinerary, which is impossible because of the involvement of I class?

TPE is doing a promotion so when you buy longhaul W or R fares, the TPE-HKG sectors are automatically upgraded to I class. So all you need to do is give MPO a call to upgrade the middle two HKG-LHR-HKG sectors. Done

I am not sure when this promotion will end but basically it has been going on since the whole of last year and it is still valid for this year. If you book online on CX website, the TPE-HKG sectors will automatically be upgraded to I class immediately. You can see it before you pay the tickets. For the duration of such promotion, you could simply call TPE reservation team.

I'm not sure if it's really a promotion because when I've always looked at flights and if there is I-fare availability, they always offer the R/I mixed ticket, not just TPE, just many regional destinations (especially PVG)...

Anyways on the phone I booked a recent trip and they offered J over Y in my KA segment for only $100HK extra.
