24-hour delay compensation?

I was wanting your insights on what type of compensation I might be entitled to after a 24-hour delay.

I was traveling from MNL-HKG-LAX-TX on a single ticket bought from CX.

Plane boarded at MNL on time, but a door would not close and after an hour of fixing, crew timed out and flight was initially declared canceled, but later announced as "awaiting status."

As MP silver, I was told to wait at the lounge, but we were kept uninformed for about an hour! I (and several other passengers) went up to the lounge podium and asked to be put on any alternative flight (There was a CX leaving two hours later, a PR around the same time, etc). The staff replied by saying that they will not accommodate any request to be offloaded from this flight because "there are too many checked bags to sort through." (Was this even a valid excuse? Is it their right to hold us hostage through our bags?).

After about 4 hours of waiting for an update, they just asked us to board and said that HKG staff will arrange for onward arrangements. I got to HK 8 hours delayed, and was handed rebookings on the same flight, but 24 hours later. (I even missed a day at work!)

Would this qualify me for denied boarding compensation/ delay compensation? (I wrote to CX and they have not offered me anything yet, they just asked me to send some more details).

Nothing. Try very hard you might get 5-10k miles.

You definitely could get some compensation!

Last year I was supposed to take Dragon Air Y class from KHH(Kaohsiung, Taiwan) to HKG and then connected CX101 departing at 23.55 to Sydney. Due to the departure delay from KHH, I lost my connected flight and forced to stay in Hong Kong overnight. (It was the last flight to Sydney at that day). CX paid the hotel and taxi and arranged a confirmed Y seat on the next morning, CX139 departing on 09.00

Overall it was about 9 hours delay. I was pretty upset for this and wrote an email to MPC. Eventually I got 20K miles compensation. Not the best result but acceptable.
