CX837 delayed 3 hours 16Dec

In transit to YVR with my family for a trip to Asia tomorrow and about 25 miles from the Canadian border I get a text message:
"CX837/16 Dec from YVR will depart at 16:25(3 hour(s) late). We are sorry for the inconvenience. Cathay Pacific Airways Limited"
Anyone know what's up?

Am at HKG now and a few N.America flights are delayed.
CX 870 HKG-SFO (about 1 hour), CX 884 HKG-LAX (about 2 hours), CX 838 YVR (4 hours)... not quite sure why, just getting the usual due to aircraft rotation or operational reasons

Yup, something more broad than just the YVR route for sure. I see lots of stuff out of HKG showing delays, CX, UA and even some cargo flights all showing a couple of hours delays.

Only two real possibilities - really bad weather (doesn't appear to be the case), or Chinese air traffic control restrictions.

all India flights also running late by 30-40 mins... not complaining is it means more time in the lovely lounges for me, but I suspect Chinese air traffic / transit passengers coming in from China as most mainland flights are running late.

Extended family flew TPE-HKG on Dec. 15th on CX, boarded CX 830 (HKG-JFK) & departed on time, checked it overnight & showed 2 hour delays (it was off the coast of Japan) - landing 2 PM instead of typical noon arrival @ JFK.

For whatever reasons, Flightstats timeline showed arrival time changed again - now showing back to on-time arrival around 30 minutes from now, noon time locally here. Must be very strong tailwind on the crossing & overcoming air traffic control ??

Looked at CX 840 and CX 846, both inbound toward JFK and (was) showing delay.

All I can see is the westbound TPac flights are tracking way north and eastbound ones way south. That does suggest some strong winds. We are tracking way up over Alaska today (according to flight plan that was filed). Some friends on NRT-SEA reported delays on 16 Dec departure too. Quite odd, if it were just air space restrictions, that wouldn't explain the head/tail wind-related routings.

I didn't realize exYVR fares are that attractive, people drive up the bother just to fly on CX!

Long time BA flyer with piles of Avios, and with changes to Avios redemptions, the SEA-YVR segment isn't included and for family of five it's easier to just drive a one way rental car.

BTW, we flew a crazy northern route and actually came across eastern tip of Mongolia on way to HKG. Business class was funny, my three little kids and then mostly college kids heading home. I certainly didn't get to travel like that as a college student!
