FA shows it took off nearly on time: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/CPA841

EDIT: Weird, FR24 shows "unknown" status. Also, I believe this is the one new livery jet.

Now Cx841 for nov 12nd New departure time change to Nov 13th 12:10 , gonna arrive hk around 4:10pm today

I don't know what is happened to cx841 for Nov 13th.

CX 841 Delayed

Interesting. I am scheduled to depart on CX841 on 17 Nov 2015. Hopefully, it will depart on time, arrive on time and be uneventful.

Was on this flight

I was on this flight. There was an older passenger in the front section of economy who needed medical attention. We were over the Artic when they asked for a doctor. Apparently the guy was having a diabetic seizure as they asked for people who had diabetic medicine (they asked the couple next to me who had some diabetes medicine) but it wasn't the right kind.

I think they offloaded the passenger at Winnepeg. But unfortunately since we needed to fly 2.5 hours back to Winnepeg, the crew was gonna time out if we continued to HKG. So YWG -> JFK, landed a little after 8pm ET.

CX841D scheduled for 12:10pm on Friday. I went on that option. It was lighter by a bit (I got my own row of 3 in Y - as did most people in the rear of Y). They gave people (particularly those with onward connections) options to take CX889, the EWR redeye or the normal CX841 at 9am on Friday.

CX841D went off without a hitch. I'm in Hong Kong. All in all not fun to go 12 hours and end up in the same place. I am thankful that it was on CX and not some other carriers. Also thankful I'm on vacation and can be thankful about having my health.

CX is reimbursing the commute costs between your local address and JFK if you decided to go home. You had the option to take a room at the JFK Crowne Plaza. Also, they gave us on the 841D $100 in service vouchers.

13Nov CX841 took off on time - think their systems are not set up to handle this. I think the Friday 841 shows correctly on flightstats.

Sounds like the situation was very well handled by CX. Now I'm wondering maybe it would be better to divert to YVR, perhaps shuffle the crew a little, a shorter flight

Everyone was sent to the Crowne Plaza, coach, business and FC passengers? It's a nice hotel for people in coach, more than most airlines would do.

Once an airplane declared any emergency, you have to land at the closest possible airport that can handle your emergency. Flying to YVR probably would be better for CX corporation, but it will be longer for the patient, and imagine if the patient dies CX will be in boatloads of trouble, that's why they landing in Winnipeg.

I was referring to when the flight had to return to JFK. YVR seems like a similar distance away, however would be easier logistically for the second leg

Could they have not stayed overnight in YWG?
The crew could have rested there.

CX could have paid AC to handle the pax. Are their agreements in place for this kind of thing?

Think the problem with this is that many of the pax required visas to "land" in Canada so it wouldn't be feasible to overnight them there since Canada wouldn't have it. Sequestering us is tricky since I believe UA got a ton of bad press for having PAX stay in military barracks someplace in Canada.

For me, given all the options - it was the best option to get the chance to sleep in my own bed and try all over again. That said, I know a few people who had time sensitive business/plans and that wasn't the best outcome for them. CX did try their best to get people with connections out either on CX889 or CX899 out of EWR that night/early morning. In the end, it's still about 14.5 hours to HKG from YWG so didn't save much time on the rescheduled CX841D from JFK vs. YWG.

Re: Crowne Plaza - that option was offered to all pax regardless of class. They did encourage you to go home and said they would reimburse cab expenses if you went home (if you were local).

Re: YVR - as someone said, you have to fly to the closest place which probably was YWG. Even still we had to dump so gas to get down to landing weight. Also YVR has all the same immigration problems you'd have overnight-ing pax in Canada. Think overall given that there's already a CX ground crew in place at JFK along with help from BA probably better than YVR since I think only that one flight that connects out of JFK goes through there.
