HKG Stopover

Hi Everybody.

I need to go to HKG for a business tip in march.

CX got nice Business class earlybird specials to SHANGHAI (and i think it is maybe nice to combine a short trip to SHANGHAI).

The thing is a stopover on HKG is not allowed.
So with can I do?, fly from AMS>HKG>SHANGHAI and directly fly back to HKG do my business things there (4 days) and go back to Shanghai to stay there a couple of days and go back home SHANGHAI>HKG>AMS

OR

Fly AMS>HKG and miss my flight to SHANGHAI, book a separate trip to SHANGHAI a couple of days later and stay there and fly back with my original ticket SHANGHAI>HKG>AMS, or is that not possible?

If necessary I can travel hand luggage only.

Hope this make sense to you?
Thanks for the answers!

First suggestion - you're exposed to Air Flow Control four times? Doable, and probably less AFC in March than any other month in the year, but still urgggh...

Your second suggestion is not legal - you just void all remaining segments on your earlybird ticket.

Can TPE be substituted for PVG? More predictable landing times and a shorter detour

P.S. first suggestion - you're gonna need multiple reentry visa, not your normal business visa.

Ok so maybe just book HKG. and go from there?
TPE is possible? but the reason was a city trip to Shanghai to do a little sightseeing.

I thought going AMS-HKG-AMS is more expensive than AMS-HKG-(TPE or PVG)-HKG-AMS. CX prices flights beginning/ending in HKG higher than routings which simply go through HKG.

It's a bit like BA ex-EU instead of ex-LHR.

We locals first fly to TPE, then fly from there (backtracking HKG) to our long-haul destinations (LHR, SYD etc.). Thought it works in reverse, though as HK residents we try to skip the last HKG-TPE.

There is not that much sightseeing in Shanghai. There are many nearby destinations that offer more opportunities for sightseeing.
If you look at threads regarding delays, you will find that delays from/to Shanghai are usually significant and can be daunting. Not worth the risk.

The Earlybird fares out of AMS are very attractive. But most discounted Business fares from Europe allow one stopover in HKG. I wonder if there exists a slightly more expensive fare which allows a stopover. In that case, I would still rule out Shanghai and prefer TPE.
The first option you suggest would work out easily to TPE. TPE-HKG is a short flight with many daily flights. In TPE the museum is amazing, nice night market, nice spring resort in Beitou which is on the red subway line.
Option 2 is not feasible.

FYI, a normal HKG-TPE-HKG turn takes 6 hours (with MCT in mind and some sane check in arrival times, from city center (central) to central).
