Waitlist query from newbie

Hi all - I am new to this forum and new to Asia Miles, after endless frustration with Qantas FF.
We travel 1-3 times a year, business class, and most often end up paying as even 11 months out we can't find award seats.
Trying to learn about Asia Miles - I have seen a few posts about the wait lists (which I'm not familiar with at all) but I have another question please.
All our points are sitting in AmexI want to wait list for 2 seats Cathay Syd-HK-Syd in January SO. do I need to transfer my Amex points now, and they get taken if the wait list comes through, or do I have time to transfer when we get the seats (presuming lucky)?
Also, would it happen that one seat would be confirmed and not the other?
Or would it be two or nothing?
Would it be smarter to wait list one seat in my Asia Miles number and another in my husbands?
Or wait list one and buy one? (This could be risky, as if the wait list doesn't come through we have to buy another seat and what if there is no availability?)
Also, how risky is wait list really? We are going on a cruise so need to be there Could we be waiting until a week before the flight dates?
Many thanks for your patience and time
Melanie

Difficult to say. My shortest transfer time was 1 day. However, it can take much longer. I have award ticketing deadline of as short as 2 days. So that is risky.

It can happen. It can also be one segment being confirmed and the other not. My wife usually gets segments confirmed immediately, and once she ticketed upgrade for one segment while still waitlisted for the other because ticketing deadline for the confirmed segment was approaching.

Probably worse.

That will become a companion award, which has a higher chance of confirming. You may also be able to get companion awards that through American Express Travel, but I suspect the fare is much higher.

Very risky, especially if you do not have Marco Polo status.
