compensation for delayed flight CX731

I'm booked on CX731, should have left HKG for DXB at 16:30 but due to a combination of technical problems and DXB being extra busy with one runway down we didn't leave until nearly midnight. When we boarded they handed be an envelope with $800 HKD in it.

Seemed like a nice gesture, especially since a majority of the delay was due to ATC delays in DXB.

Is this normal for CX? I've only had comparable delays on AC and they didn't do anything for the entire plane (though as I was Super Elite at the time they upgraded my from Y to J)
