ex-SIN possible overbooking?

Hey guys, I'm looking at flights for Friday and seems like CX650 and a few couple other flights are showing fully booked economy (Y0). Is it normal that flights zeroed out almost a week before departure and shows sign of overbooking? Do you guys know what do they normally offer for VDB ex-SIN if overbooking occurs?

Seats will miraculously open up about 72 hours prior to departure, and then more will open up about 24 hours prior if there are to be had due to MPC holding seats back for its Gold and Diamond members.

If you qualify, eg DM and GO, or OW elite, you may be op up'd. You won't be left behind.

Last year was on CX714 in J class (redeye flight) during the year-end season. At the gate holding area, they were making announcements for passengers who were willing to give up their seats to take the early morning flight next day. Heard they mentioned about providing a night hotel stay. Not too sure what else was offered.

Not too sure if anyone took up the offer but ultimately everyone was able to board the plane and was full in J class.

Yes, normal for it to be zeroed. Rare for it to actually be overbooked. VDB quite uncommon. Op-up much more common.

Was on the 690 last Monday and they op-uped several to F. I think originally there were supposed to be 4 of us in F. During boarding ISM went on the PA to ask for any volunteers to move to the next flight, apparently they need a seat for someone who needs to catch a connecting flight in HKG. The captain didn't seem to look very pleased as the ground staff didn't inform him of this last minute switch.

I was just curious why in F that day we had 2 SFP and 1 FP, where as normally it would be 1SFP and 1/2FP.

CX714 can be have extremely variable loads. Once, I was op-uped including 4 others, and it was the highest density 773 in the regional config (most Y seat in the CX fleet). A couple of months after that, the same flight operated by a 744, departed 20 mins early as there was virtually nobody to board or luggage to load. With a little bit of tail wind, it arrived HKG almost an hour ahead of schedule - to an empty airport at 4-ish am.

Yup, I've been there too. Was annoyed about the one-hour early arrival into HKG as I was in F and wanted to sleep!

Probably because many on this redeye flight are business travellers with last minute changes or plans, e.g. delayed ending of meeting so changed to last flight of the day, or urgently need to go to HKG for a meeting tomorrow... stuff like that?
