HKG-MAN-........JFK?!
Great that CX are flying back to the North of England! I remember reading in the past that CX aspired to have access to LHR-JFK, reciprocating VS being given rights to fly HKGSYD. I can well understand European Carriers not being keen on CX getting Transatlantic from London. However the situation from BHX & MAN is usually far more liberal for non-EU carriers. Biman, for example, have had flights BHXJFK and PIA have had flights MANJFK. I think CX would probably get a positive reaction from the Authorities and Northern England if they flew across the Atlantic from Manchester. We can dream!
From the UK suddenly MAN CX JFK CX YVR CX HKG CX LON/MAN would become possible........

Whilst a MAN-JFK would be awesome, it would generally be low yielding and a far too large plane for the route. It would also be an inefficient use of resources (777-300ERs) and does not open any new destinations. New York is adequately served from HKG, and it is difficult to get slots in NYC, so any new slots would be used to add HKG service e.g. 2nd daily HKG-EWR.
Of course we can dream though.... but this would be a very non-CX thing to do.
Anyways AA and UA serve MAN-JFK daily each + Thomas Cook will launch JFK with 767/330 soon, so should be enough capacity for MAN-NYC.
On a side note, I am so excited by CX returning to MAN, when I have my next trip to UK, I think I will purposefully fly HKG-MAN to support the new route + at the moment there are some excellent fares to MAN.
