Experience CX First

Folks - I just booked a round trip CX flight in First to from the US to DAC:

JFK->HKG CX 845 (in First)
HKG->DAC KA 192 (12 hour layover)

The return is in a week

DAC->HKG KA 191
HKG->LAX CX 884 (in First)

Looking for some guidance and information to make this trip memorable:

1. I want to stay one night in HKG and experience the city; do you all recommend this and if so, should I do it on the way in or out? Also any recommendations on the top 3 things to do in HKG in 24 hours. I am a total foodie BTW

2. Any insights on Dragon Air Business class to DAC (they use a 330 and I believe all these are retrofitted with the new J seats)

3. Looking forward to experiencing the Wing also; any other lounges I should go visit?

The trip is costing me 97.5K AA miles each way due to a separate award ticket from HKG to DAC. I had the option to fly Etihad First through Abu Dhabi but opted to experience the CX first.

Thank you all.

Hi -

First, good on you for redeeming for CX F. As I have said before, sometimes you simply have to see how the 1% live.

Remember in CX F, it is what you want,when you want. Extra caviar is fine if there is any left. Aso, ask them to save some caviar for your eggs with breakfast. I also had "surf 'n turf", consisting of lobster tail and a ribeye (yes, two entrees). Both were excellent. Also, don't forget the tag attached to the pajama bag, you can take it into a store to get some nice handkerchiefs.

At the Wing, it is worth getting a cabana room, even if there is a wait. Being able to take a bath after a long flight is fantastic. If you do that on your outbund, you will be in HK airport the whole time. Also, depending on your times, you can get a very reasonable meal in the F lounge restaurant in HKG.

If you are spending one night in HK, I would spring for a harbor view room at the Intercontinental HK in Kowloon. Take a ten minute walk to the Star pier to take a ferry to Central. Get directions to Victoria Peak , take the tram. Finally, get on the street car along central to take in the sights, there are some local street markets just off the line. There is also a night market where you can get some nice street food.

I am sure other will chime in, but for 24 hours

Much appreciated Orwaid; great idea on saving some caviar for breakfast and the surf and turf.

I have a bunch of Intercontinental points so will spring for Harbor view room. The hotel gets pretty good reviews on Trip Advisor.

Thank you again.

Hi -

Member that your IC points will only get you a standard room. A mentioned elsewhere here, you can upgrade that to a harbor view room for 600HKD ++.

The hankys are in PYE stores in HK, PEK, PVG, CAN. There were some other cities, I forget which ones. I do know you need to bring the coupon attached to the bag your pajamas come in.

Other tidbits for the flight -- if you ask them to keep some of the fruit from dinner, they will serve it to you for breakfast. It is wonderful with clotted cream.

Also, the burger available midflight is quite tasty.

Also, since you are on a 777, see if you can get 2A. 1A and 2A have the left aisle to themselves with a small wall so it really feels like a private plane. I like 2A because it is farther away from the galley.

Hi -

Yes, I saw that thread and read through it. I might have missed it, but I think you might get a 2nd tin if there is one left, or will everyone just get one?

If you are only going to get one tin, period, I would seriously think about getting it at breakfast. I know they would hold it for me.

But remember that 2A has a slightly restricted view. You have to lean forward to look out because there is no window directly adjacent to your seat, as there is in 1A. I nearly always sit in 1A, and never hear noise from the galley. The galley is forward of the right aisle. At the front of the left aisle is Door 1L and a seat and small working area for the ISM. No galley or food preparation area.

I also just booked first class on CX for the first time recently! Will be flying ORD-NRT on JAL First, spend a few days in Tokyo then fly HND-HKG on CX First before returning HKG-JFK on CX First. The part I'm most excited about is that the HND-HKG segment will be on a 747 which I've been missing so much. I used to fly in a 747 all the time and always loved it, but since 2005, I haven't been on one once!

Doradee - I tried to do the JAL split routing too but could not find any F awards on the dates of my travel. Have fun.

Good that you are getting the 747. Try to get 1A if you can, right in the nose.

Thank you all.

Considering how much CX is taking away from their F services and how much the Middle East carriers are pouring in theirs, you should have gone with EY instead.

You have a point, Guy. I'm heavily invested in Oneworld, so I'm staying there for now. But I did watch the video of the EY 380 "apartment;" and I'd love to try it!
