CX E Fare Upgrade Question
My friend flew on CX 883 (LAX>HKG) on a revenue "E" ticket.
When we arrived at the airport, he asked to be upgraded, CX staff said he could upgrade to J for "20,000 AsiaMiles"
I thought the E ticket wasn't upgradeable?
I ask because clearly this is a great move. Book a $1,800 RT E fare in Premium Economy and upgrade to J for 20k miles each way vs. 120k miles for a RT J award.
Thoughts?

Either that particular staff at LAX was a newbie who didn't know the fare class/upgrade rules properly; or there was a mis-communication between you and your friend, and he actually bought an R fare.
Seems too good to be true that CX has decided to make E an upgradeable fare.
Anyway, what happened in the end?

Yeah this was a mistake or a miscommunication somewhere.
I flew that same route (CX881, LAX-HKG) about a week ago, on an E fare, and I upgraded it (at check in) to J with 20,000 Asia Miles, but I also had to pay around $190 to make that leg into an "R" fare first.
If your buddy really pulled it off with an E fare and no payment, it was just luck. There has been no policy change by CX on this recently.

(Yes - he ended up paying the $190 in addition to the 20k AsiaMiles)
(Reading more - it appears the $190 makes the E>R and hence the upgrade)
WHICH is still a great deal for J on CX ($1,800 RT E fare, to R for $400 more (RT) and then only 40k AsiaMiles for J)

So you're saying that you also experienced this "mistake" or are you saying that E is upgradeable for 20k miles plus the $190

Can't produce R fares on ex-USA on CX.com but quick search for YVR-HKG gives me $2322 for E, and $2827 for R. Difference of CAD $505.

When I try to book the Y+ ticket online, it always quotes an R outbound and an E inbound. You have to call CX to get an R fare priced for both segments.

BTW, what's the difference between the RLXSPCL 2000.00 and RLWSPCL 2100.00? both are R class right?

The fare difference is calculated at the airport based on a HALF R/T HALF R/T R/E fare and then difference is charged and upgrade done.
Instant upgrades are a great feature of the MPC/AM programs and I am glad that they have the sense to do everything quickly at the airport - only wish BA could learn from this
