Understand. I know you can do this at the airport.

However, I presume you would like confirmation in advance. In that case I recommend talking with a travel agent so you can tell them exactly what you want, or perhaps CX. Anyone else on here know for sure?

Regardless of when you do it, you should expect that the I fare HKG-HND-HKG sectors are worth very little. So basically be prepared to pay 4-5k USD for the upfare from I, since I is pretty cheap. So I think your all-in cost will be 8-9k USD.

Thanks for your reply, yes, it is a I fare, bought for 4.8k CAD, or 3.8k or so USD, all booking attempts through the CX website.

Sorry for the mix-up, reason I asked is that at the time of booking, attempting to do so online in F would result in a 13k CAD fare, with indeed, the first leg in J instead of I, a huge upcharge for no benefits (that apply to me).

A dummy booking today for the same dates (8 months or so from now) resulted in 7.5k CAD D fare, or 19k (!) CAD J+F fare, while HKG-HND in F has remained around 5k USD.

So basically the question would have been better phrased as whether I could upcharge HKG-HND (preferrably one-way, but return if prices in the former are high) without touching the the YYZ-HKG leg at all (as I fare is good enough for me).

CAD4.8K is an excellent fare. My feeling is that your HKG-HND-HKG is "free", or even worse, HKG is the HIP. In that case, the fare difference may be as high as the HKG-HND-HKG F fare.

Have you checked with your TA on what they can arrange for you?

The new regional seat was medicore at best, but I'm not complaining about the free upgrade though. One thing was the day after, the same flight was subbed to a 747 which was a rarity since the jumbo does the route like 5 times a year. Talk about luck!

Could someone help me check the inventory on the following?

Two tickets booked thru TA, LAX-HKG with PE (R) and trying to upgrade to J. The PE tickets have already been confirmed.

10/6 LAX - HKG -- CX883
11/2 HKG - LAX -- CX882

Thank you!

What would be the cost to change your ticket to E outbound + R inbound minus change fees?

Thank you. What are my real chances here?

We are flexible, so +/- 1-2 days of outbound date is OK if it will increase the likelihood to upgrade to J.

What about CX 881 or 897 on the same day, 10/6?

Dear Cathay friends,

Was wondering your thoughts on the likelihood that my request for AM upgrade using miles, from Y+ to J, would clear on the following sectors:

HONG KONG

HONG KONG CX 197 R 25NOV 2100
AUCKLAND

Is it still possible to pay the fare difference from economy to premium economy online using change flight tool at manage my booking? I remember doing this once but apparently I can no longer see any other cabins?

How likely is to get an upgrade from PE to Business for long haul flight when one is not even a member of OW. Asking for friend traveling from SFO to SIN this week.

Depends on what kind of upgrade you're asking about. If your friend is wanting to pay to change a revenue PE to J, then as long as there's seats available then it'll be fine.

If you're asking about op-ups, then I can't imagine the process for CX is much different than BA where you're a Silver. Your friend would have to have paid for the highest fare class in PE, to be on an overbooked flight with enough J available to either cater for all of the CX and OneWorld elites on the flight; or have very few elites.

It's hard to tell without knowing exactly which flight your friend is going to be taking, you might be able to check on Expert Flyer for them. But I am reasonably confident in saying I'd have more luck at winning the jackpot in Lotto.

Very, very low. Approaching zero. Possible due to a luck-of-the-draw last minute pinch and they grab the nearest body. But realistically, nil.

Fare paid is irrelevant for CX op-ups, fyi. However, you are correct in spirit - it's damn hard for this guy. CX follows the hierarchy priority below, if not exact this chart is close:

CX DMP
CX DM/IN
CX GO
CX staff being ferried for work duty
OW Emerald
CX staff on ID tickets
CX SL
OW Sapphire
CX GR
Asia Miles
No Status

(May not be exact but roughly.)

heman's friend presumably falls at the bottom.

Thanks for the correction QRC3288. Am I correct in presuming that fare class is the decider for status pax of the same status only then?

No, it isn't. Historically , CX used "boarding number".... Aka who checked in first. Now, apparently CX has/is transitioned/ing to a proprietary calculated "customer intrinsic value" (CIV) score as tiebreaker. I don't think the implementation across ports is uniform, but the gist is they're trying to identify customers they deem of higher value and give them the upgrade in a tiebreaker scenario.

There is someone working for CX mgmt (either a consultant or actually at CX, we're not precisely sure) who interacts on this board semi-regularly. According to him/her, it was emphasized it's a tiebreaker only, and not say prioritizing a Green member over Gold, or Silver over Diamond, etc.

Only on the 20/10 CX873, where it's Y0 right now. Otherwise no flight has the Y0 availability required to upgrade.

I had very few few op-ups for CX 873. My last upgrade was 10 months ago from J to F. I had a lot more op-ups for CX 872. There are probably more passengers going for instant upgrades or one-way upgrades for CX 873 because of the longer flying time.

So PEY-J upgrade should be very difficult, but still possible to try as there is still F availability. CX can still bump someone to F to make room for your upgrade.

Hi guys! I will be flying PEY from Manchester to Hong Kong in January. I have an upgrade voucher and I want to use it in this journey. Should I use it when I fly from MAN or when I fly back from HKG? And does an upgrade voucher guarantee an upgrade? Or it depends on the availability in J or other factor?

No. Read last post: One class upgrade appreciation card

How reliable is EF availability for CX? I signed up for a subscription and seems that it's only based on US as a point of sale. For example, an upcoming HKG-ORD flight of mine is zeroed out for R and everything below. CX.com does not allow booking for PEY and EY class ex-US (this being a return trip), or ex-HK and ex-Japan. But I see H class for ex-TPE and Y class for ex-PEK bookable for the same flight. Interesting...

How about the EF/cx.com seat map?

Anyway. As mentioned it's at F1 A1 J9 C9 D9 I9 W1 R0...all zeroes after. Good chance for op-up as OWS in R? :P

Hi there, I'm confused, as I am on the waitlist to upgrade from premium economy to business on CX 841 on 11/24, and see on BA that I could get 2 seats in business using Avios points-same flight. What's up with that! ? I would think they would take care of Marco polo / asia miles members first.

I was advised by others on this forum that the waitlist isn't that reliable so if you see open seats available for redemption on Avios, CALL ASIA MILES NOW!!! Or is it Cathay? Someone else will know better but the point is, don't wait for the upgrade to come through on its own.

Hi there, and thanks for the advise. Indeed, I purchased a Y+ seat months ago, and wish to upgrade to J using Asia Miles. Still J seats are available on BA. I called Asia Miles last night and they said BA has it's own bucket of J award inventory. So it seems that Asia Miles come behind the BA Avios customers. I'll just dream 8's until my flight!

Thanks again, Suziemay, I dreamt 8's, took your suggestion to call AM service center, and good fortune was mine after a few minutes of checking by the kind agent. Best wishes to all.

percysmith Nov 18, 2015 6:08 pm

No way BAEC comes before AM. This is worth putting into the AM agents' incorrect thread

However can you see the seat in cathaypacific.com?

Tonight they gave me the seat, last night the agent either didn't know how too or couldn't-even though multiple seats available on BA using Avios for J. (I did not check cathaypacific.com to check J availability)

Best wishes all.

Yippee! Happy for you. Now waiting nervously for mine. Been checking Cathay and BA reward sites but unfortunately for me mine aren't direct flights. I'm seeing awards available for part of the leg but not the full one :( Flying on Wednesday 11/25 so if my upgrade doesn't come through in the next few days, guess I'm SOL (or ringing up Cathay every hour).

suziemay Nov 19, 2015 1:40 pm

**Edited: Their ears must have been ringing. Immediately after I posted, my inbound flight upgrades came through. YIPPEE! My revised questions below :D :D

1) My booking confirmation indicates that my flight needs to be ticketed by Nov 21, otherwise booking will be cancelled. On Cathay's site, it's showing confirmed seats for both PE and Business for the inbound flights. Do I have to call to confirm I want the upgrade, or will this sort itself out?

2) Do I need to resubmit upgrade request for outbound after my inbound flights are completed, or will I remain on the waitlist for that?

THANK YOU!

suziemay Nov 19, 2015 2:31 pm

Heh. I answered my own questions. Figured I wasn't focusing on work anyway so may as well call Cathay to straighten this out. I also think I was using outbound/inbound incorrectly. Oops.

I had to call them because I had requested a return upgrade (55,000 Asia Miles) but only one way was available so I guess the upgrade wasn't complete yet. And also since they could only confirm the upgrade one way, they have to apply the one-way mileage requirement which is 35,000 miles. If the upgrade comes through for my return flight, they will also apply 35,000 miles. HOWEVER, if I call back, they will issue me a credit of 15,000 miles because my original request was for a roundtrip upgrade.

No need to resubmit, and I now have a new deadline for my return flight upgrade. I will need to make sure I have at least 35,000 miles on my account by this new deadline. Since I don't at the moment, I'm in the process of transferring Amex membership reward miles. Let's see how quickly that comes through...

(nice conversation I had with myself on here, hopefully I'm helping somebody)

I am looking to buy OSL-LHR-HKG in J and back and upgrade to F for at least one sector LHR-HKG or HKG-LHR. On the days I am looking to travel it seems that there are F redemptions open for LHR-HKG according to CX website. Am I supposed to call MPC to hold the upgrade before I ticket? I think I have tried before having them hold an upgrade for me before I proceed to buy the ticket but they were reluctant to do it...

Thanks!

suziemay Dec 11, 2015 9:55 pm

How long before mileage difference credited back?

I recently completed a trip using a RT upgrade award worth 55,000. Because my flights became available one at a time, I ended up using 75,000 miles in total. I called MPC to get the 20,000 miles credited back and they informed me it would take 6-8 weeks. Does that sound right? I'm not sure why it takes so long plus I would like to use them for another trip I'm planning to take in February.

So far I haven't spoken to a MPC customer service rep that instilled any confidence in me with their responses, so thought I'd check here. Thanks!

DieselYVR Dec 13, 2015 7:43 pm

They often say 6-8 weeks but in my experience they credit them back much quicker. It's been less than two weeks for me.

Is it fairly common for loads to fluctuate considerably in business?
What looked like an empty cabin (20+ seats open) and showed J9 on expertflyer has now gone to J0.

I'm waitlisted as a Silver for PEY to J upgrade on 883 1/6. Not looking great at the moment. Should I give it a few days, or start looking for better availability / routing?

First week of Jan HKG-USA is just tough, tough, tough. Lots of flights zeroed out in almost all cabins.
