Which has a better chance of securing a J seat: PY upgrade to J or outright J redemption?

Say in the The Pier first lounge and realize I’ve dropped my boarding pass for CX123 in security (very unlikely my I must add).

The lovely ladies at the first lounge sorted it for me and handed be a business boarding pass.

There are still seats in Economy, but you got upgraded, despite not being a CX member, only an OWE.

They treat you better than us CX GOLD lol.

to be fair, the PE cabin on board was totally full… not sure about economy but moving me probably made sense in some sort of OP Up equation!

Adding a data point here.

PVG - HKG on 8th March. Booking was 7pm but I arrived early to catch the 9am flight instead as I was on flex fare. Lady at the counter made some calls and was issued a boarding pass for Premium Economy. Proceed to the gate and found out was upgraded to J instead, all the way to the front of the plane at row 11.

On 10th, similar happened with flex fare, went to check in HKG-CDG at the machine and was issued a boarding pass for PEY at 32F. Went through customs and had a nice supper at The Pier and went to my gate, was checking my phone and I noticed the app showing me my seat have been changed to 23D. When I refreshed it, it suddenly switched to my original Y seat which was 40K, so I was thinking probably I have been op-down back to my original booking. Surprise surprise, when I was at the gate they bumped me up to J at 23D. F and J was full, and I suspect the rest of the plane as well.

So basically I booked Y but was bumped all the way to J on both the regional connecting and long haul flights from Shanghai to Paris. I am a GO member.

Same here. In JAN I had to return to YYZ and booked PEK - YYZ in class Y. A few days before my flight I had to make sudden date changes and I was given an option on the CX website to upgrade to PY for 13.9 USD. Then at the gate the agent upgraded me to J.

14k usd is steep. 1.4k usd perhaps?
either way whenever they are offerring upgrades for cash, game theory apply. those who would pay 1.4k wud have purchased J to start so your luck for op-up is even better.

only time i paid 1.2k USD for last minute upgrade is when i just recovered from Covid and wanted to sleep.

Haha brother. I meant 13.9 dollars as in 13 dollars and 90 cents. I bought Y flex where changes only costs fare difference (i needed to leave PEK earlier), and there was a premium Y option for an additional 13.90 $. Then was upgraded from PY to J at the gate.
