Your first price is correct as current ex-JNB published fare for JNB-USA rt is around 48000 ZAR while E class is around 26000, and indeed upfare for one way is normally just half the price difference, but the fare rules change every few months so I'm not sure if you would have to upfare the entire ticket. However, bear in mind that JNB POS and ex-JNB inventory itself is very volatile and can change from moment to moment. I just looked and it seems that 830 and 840 are still available, but it is weird as C and D class are zeroed out. I suggest you to call HKG hotline to sort it out (don't bother with the ZA hotline - those agents are incompetent.)

By the way, I have done this before and it is a physical and mentally stressful experience to put it lightly (in both J and W). I would also look into free stopovers in HKG granted by the I fares if you have the flexibility to do so :) (well, I believe E fares also have free ish stopovers included...)

Thanks for you reply G-CVIC. When I changed my flight a couple days ago to lengthen my stopover in HKG, by several hours to give me a little extra rest, (a nominal US$45) is when I noticed the website offering upfares. Figured for the price quoted I'd go for J since my wife and I will have just arrived from a 32 hour trip from DFW. I'm sending her onward to HRE from JNB whilst I do my milage run. Will be meeting back up that Sunday. She thinks I'm a little crazy.

Will call the help line from here in the US to see what I can figure out. Thanks again for your response!

**Update**

Upgraded yesterday for 15,895.00 ZAR so I'm pretty satisfied. Just going to leave it to luck on the return.

Greetings,

Flying SFO-HKG in PE (E) this Friday (6/30/17). I am unable to select a seat ("Please check at the time of check-in" on CX website); EF shows PE full with one seat blocked. 7 seats open in J with another 7 blocked.

I am OWE and wondering if there is any strategy that I should take to op-up to J. Maybe check-in early/late, call ahead, etc. Not terribly hopeful, love CX PE, just wondering!

Any comments are welcome. Apologies in advance if my query is redundant - I read the last 20 or so pages of the thread and may have missed it.

Many thanks.

Chance of upgrade is not affected by time of check-in. However, affect the time you know if you are upgraded or not.

When I flied KIX-HKG, didn't do online check-in and on a redemption Y ticket. Arrived the airport 60 min before departure, the ground agent didn't mention anything when I check in. Yet, I was being called while in the lounge and said I was being upgraded to PEY on an A359.

Another flight from NGO to HKG, I booked PEY and arrived at the airport 2 hours prior departure. The GA said Y was overbooked so I might have chance to upgrade to J. However, she could not confirm at the time I check in.

Once also experienced an instant upgrade from Y to J while check in.

So, just be patient and wait. That is what you can do.

Chance of upgrade can be affected by check-in time, but to a lesser extent. When it does, the earlier the better chance.

Can anyone help to figure out the loads?

Chances of upgrade: OWE in Y on CX255/10JUL?

Many thanks

Can I ask what success people have had clearing redemption Business (U class) for HKG-YVR? My wife and I are doing a HKG-YVR-HKG RT with the below flights:

Thu, 11/23: CX838, 1620-1145, X (Econ) confirmed, U (Biz) and T (PEY) waitlisted
Mon, 11/27: CX889, 0110-0700, U confirmed, X and T waitlisted

Any prior experience as to chances of this clearing last-minute (and when), or help checking on loads to get a sense would be very much appreciated.

On a slightly OT note, is 1.5 hours sufficient for transfer at YVR if we are going into US? We are connecting to an AA flight to DFW

On the Waiting List for Premium Economy

Hi All,

So, I've enough asiamiles to redeem a return PE flight from London-HK-Cebu.
After speaking with Marco Polo, I'm currently on the PE waiting list for 2 outbound flights on 23rd Dec. My inbound seats in January are available, so I'm halfway there!

First question is: Does having the inbound seats increase the likelihood of acquiring the outbound seats and confirming the flights in full?

I also spoke with CX reservations who informed me that there are lots of seats available on PE on those two outbound flights Dec 23. However, the Marco Polo staff weren't able to tell me how the waiting list works, ie if there's a quota, etc.
I've just been told to hang tight for a month, and if I receive an email then they'll have a seat on one of my outbound flights.

Second question: What is the quota on flights awards seats, and does CX wait until very close to the departure date to release those seats?

If this has been answered previously, apologies - I haven't seen it!

Thanks

No relationship. Each flight seat released handled separately and what the waitlisted passengers' itineraries are are irrelevant

None when close in. It's just a matter of when

13/6 PE to YVR released on 12/5 (waitlisted a month before). That flight was pretty available so pretty relevant to your case.

Update 3/7: I've a colleague waiting for HKG-LAX PE 15/8 who was cleared today, but it's the 26/8 return flight that's in demand.

13/6 CX888 PE: released on 12/5

13/6 CX888 F: released on 9/6

21/11/16 CX889 J: released on 15/11

10/3 CX889 F: 55 hours before departure

Current loads (both I9 E9 Q9, CX889 A4) are irrelevant for CX decision making. Too far ahead unfortunately.

Thanks so much, percy! Given how close they seem to be releasing, I suppose I'll have to ticket the Y+J itinerary first (they gave me until end of July), and then keep the waitlist for J on the HKG-YVR leg subsequently.

Thanks again

CX thanks you for all the reissue fees you will be paying, which are paid on a per instance basis http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...l#post22819023

Thanks for the insights Percysmith. My only concern is that I really don't want to risk waiting until just before the departure, and then there won't be any waitlisted seats open...

As a first timer redeeming flights reward - is being on the PE waiting lists just before Christmas a high risk of not getting a seat?

Can someone help with tomorrow's (4/7) CX746 (BAH-[DXB]-HKG) loads?

OWS (BAEC) traveling in Y.

Thanks!

(Also how do upgrades work on multi-sector flights (Eg this one with an intermediate stop in DXB? If BAH-DXB isn't full, will they only upgrade ex-DXB pax?)

percysmith Jul 3, 2017 6:32 am

Cx746 seems sold out in all fare classes.

Segment by segment.

I called to ask if I would have to pay a re-issue fee if I confirmed Y+J now and later issued J+J if I managed to confirm J at a later date per this. However, I tried asking (very nicely) if they would consider releasing J inventory for a DM member, which (after a brief hold) they were able to do!

Double issuance fees successfully avoided! At least this time around

ORD-HKG a couple of days ago

One friend in PE (Gold) 2 others in Economy (one of them Diamond) The two in economy got upgraded to business at check-in while the person in PE got no upgrade. All checked in together

Didn't notice your status
Yes you can release seats out of revenue inventory
I also thought you guys get waived reissue fees

Were the two in Economy on the same booking? Would lend credence to some value in being on the same PNR as a higher status member..

c) None of you would be upgraded

And finally was a.

PS: Flying on 14 July, hope there will be a free upgrade XD

Have had a) and b)- possibly c) as well. One was a clear instance of my GO Wife jumping a DM for a J->F op-up

Got an op up!

did ORD-HKG on a Friday in PE, no upgrade. On the return on a Sunday asked nicely at the counter if any upgrades were available (AA emerald) and she came back with two boarding passes in Biz!

it also happened to be my birthday so not sure how we got it, but was nice! (Well day after, but the first segment started on my birthday, HKG was just the transit stop).

as far as loads went, I was watching both on expert flyer and both days looked quite similar.

Have a paid CX itinerary in E (PY) (Japan - Canada via HK and back), an AA account with PLT, and a completely empty Asia Miles account.

I am willing to buy miles on Asia Miles or another program in order to have a chance at upgrading the reservation.

What options / programs would be available to me to do this. I know that it is not possible with AA, but the only option I can find for getting Asia Miles is to receive them as a gift...

I will keep this brief as I don't think this "how to acquire AM" is really related to this thread, but in brief:

1) you can "top up" Asia Miles balances if you already have a certain amount, for an expensive price per mile. Search the Asia Miles website or here for this.

2) Amex Mileage Rewards transfers to Asia Miles.

3) Citi Thank You transfers to Asia Miles.

4) I assume you're not based in HK, but if so there are a number of Asia Miles partners locally in HK.

jagmeets Jul 10, 2017 2:57 am

E class isn't upgradable with miles..

percysmith Jul 10, 2017 3:02 am

Ooops. I missed that too.

G-CIVC Jul 10, 2017 4:19 am

E class upfare to R will be double or more to begin with. Think 260k JPY up (I forgot exactly)

Buying AM straight away will cost a fortune, and IIRC there is a limit one can buy directly from CX to 'top up' a redemption once it clears (30% of award I think), but at this point might just buy the D (business) fare instead.

Finally apart from buying AM straight away OP can also buy SPG points to convert to AM which I think will be cheaper.

Is there anyone who can check on availability for a possible waitlist upgrade for me?

My boyfriend and I are on the waitlist for a miles upgrade from PE to Business for CX 812 (HKG to BOS) on September 30, 2017. What's the likelihood this will clear and when?

Thanks in advance!

In reality, no one can tell at this moment, it's too early. You will start to hear good news if any around 30 days before departure.

Just wanted to thank everyone who has been so helpful on this thread, and add another data point:

CX746 on 4/7

Asked at BAH check-in whether the flight was full, agent replied "full from Dubai, but everyone will get a seat". She said I was pretty high up on the upgrade list (flight seems to be mostly connections to MNL) and any upgrades would be handed out in DXB.

BAH-DXB was fully in Y but J had like 3 people. In DXB, most people deboarded (CX seems to be doing pretty well on this 5th freedom) and cleaners came on. At the same time, station manager came on and handed out new boarding passes. Last row in J (21) appeared to be reserved for upgrades.

Flight left to HKG 100% full, and was an excellent flight indeed

Flew CX255 HKG-LHR 2 days ago on my birthday. On check in at HKIA, my travel companion (only an AM member) and I were both upgraded from Y to J without me even asking, despite J being completely full.

I was given a two class upgrade on HND-HKG last year, but never thought CX would be that generous on a long haul flight and on such a popular route.

CX888 YVR - JFK segment on bday with E fare. No upgrade or even lounge invitation (guess the check-in staff was new). Mentioned to lounge manager and was told business class was wide open. At the same time CX upgraded another E (CX 691) to I 6 weeks ahead...guess my "bday upgrade" was deferred lol?

No. I am OWS. But reading from past datapoints I did not think they treat OW(non-MPC) member differently? Maybe I am wrong.

Good to know this. Glad I did not ask directly as I was fine with a 6-hour transcon on PE.
