So, you book an extended stopover and expect the airline to provide you with a free hotel room so you can entertain a prostitute. Charming.
I'm just asking a simple question and if that didn't happened with me before in another airlines I'll not ask and bothering u :) |

It does not need to be documented but TAs (not HK ones) overseas booking CX know about this.
without all those posts this thread would only be 1 page long. I also hope many of those who participated had similar responses when you first came into FT and asked something along the lines of, if I'd get an opup - no its not documented. PS. I've also experienced a few "undocumented" benefits over the weekend from CX. |

Its just for ppl who ask if they should go for the last extra step to get DM, the answer is yes. |
One of the more entertaining threads on CX board!
I actually picked up some good stuff from this thread, like the national airline of Bangladesh is bi and masculine - Bangladelicious!
The OP should find a Starwood property for transit - I swear to Allah that there's a thread on the SPG board about porn videos showing on TVs in the gym at a SPG property. |

Corn on the 4th of July
The OP has to go to the land of the young and free to visit SPG properties with free movies.
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/starw...rking-out.html http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/starw...enter-tvs.html Back to the topic, I think OZ, KE and CZ gives (or used to) a free room to economy passengers for dayuse or overnight stay, for Europe-Asia-Australia flights where the connection exceeds certain number of hours. You have to apply for it when you book the ticket.

Can't speak on Cathay, but for everybody getting on their high horse and laughing at OP's suggestion - I've flown from Sydney to London (economy) three times a year since 2011 with Korean Air, and on every occasion they have put me up at the Hilton in Incheon on the way over, completely free of charge.

A lot of us here would just prefer having an airline that can get us effectively to our destination with good connection times, and good frequencies. If you're after a free hotel night here and there, then CX is probably not the best choice for you. |
China Eastern and Hainan both provide a free transit hotel when you have a forced overnight on an international itinerary. However, it must be a *forced* overnight, you can't intentionally book an overnight layover and get a free transit hotel.
That being said, it's not something you'd really want. Both airlines put you in a 2 or 3 star hotel (rated by mainland standards) next to the airport. In both Beijing and Shanghai, the airport is far from the city. So it's really just a place to sleep overnight. |

In your case, my understanding is KE has significantly less connectivity to both London and Sydney compared to CX. CX flies 4x daily to SYD and up to 6x daily to LON, split between LHR and LGW. It's kinda a no brainer that a carrier like KE has to give extras out to get people to take a less-desirable itinerary. Not to mention, due to CX's extensive frequencies, there is never a time when a traveler needs to make an overnight at HKG for a connection (either way) bewteen LHR and SYD, as well as many/most of CX's primary connection cities. Yes many of them opt to, but the most-convenient frequency doesn't require an overnight due to CX's flight banks, to almost all of their N. American, European and Oz connections. CX is all about frequency. (as we all begrudgingly admit...it comes at the expense of, among other things, bad J class food). To the routes CX designates as "trunk" routes, CX has pretty absurd #s of frequencies. On top of the above, 4x daily to LAX, 3x to MEL, up to 3x daily to SFO, and 5x daily to NYC (JFK+EWR) if you include a connecting flight via YVR. This is one of the main reasons why, despite CX's crap food in J class (KE is far superior in my limited experience, particularly with the booze), I still fly CX. And, in the infrequent scenarios when CX doesn't have daily service on both connections, my understanding is they do provide accommodations. Just hunt around these pages and you'll see folks mentioning free hotels. It's just that CX is a considerably larger airline than KE and this is a rarity on CX. I don't have experience here but I have indeed read about this on FT. Finally, I'm not totally an expert here but I've flown QR enough to know they don't give you a free hotel unless you book the most convenient itinerary. In the case of CX, just due to their flight banks, it's very rare when the most convenient connection requires an overnight at HKIA.

It's not like they just hand anyone who wants a hotel a free hotel room, aka if you're booking an extra 12 hours just to spend the night, but there was a 3 hour transit available, they don't give you a hotel. Aka, it must be a *forced* overnight, you can't intentionally book an overnight layover and get a free transit hotel. CX doesn't really do this.
