A few years ago I got on a high horse about moving revenues from Cathay and made a point of flying to secondary European destinations on Qatar and Emirates ex-HKG. I had my secretary basically make a matrix of every which way I could fly to Europe that completely eliminated Cathay and OW from the picture, and still hit all of our European clients. We also had meetings in the Middle East. She did a bit of work and did not figure this free hotel room thing out. She's very competent. You have me thinking either we were badly missing out on those airlines comping my Doha/Dubai hotel rooms for my meetings or you're possibly just mistaken.

some airlines like Qatar u hv 2 ask them giving u free room before ur flight .

All that airlines they provided me a free hotel at least once .. my last flight on Biman was from KUL To RUH with transit 13 hours and before that on Royal Brunei from JED to KUL both of them provided me free accomodation with meals . On Qatar and Turkish also same my flights was from ARN to RUH with transit around 9 hours on Qatar and 13 on Turkish all of them they provided me accomodation .

For ur info some airlines if u call them , ask them or check their site about do they provide a accomodation u'll not find anything or they will say no that's happened with me twice , Especially on Biman just by the time I reached DAC
I went to the transit area then they gave me two options 1st staying in that area 2nd staying in hotel for free . so I chose 2 go 2 the hotel and I paid $21 for visa costs only .

Hi there, just out of curiousity and asking, were the times you were given free rooms on occassions where the long layovers were involuntary i.e. there are no logical connections at your port of transit within a short timeframe? Or did you book your itinenary voluntarily as such, i.e. booking the longest layover possible?

chaseUA Sep 6, 2013 2:54 am

in addition to the airlines mentioned above, Egyptair and Ethiopian also provide free accommodation for layovers over 8 hours. these have always been on flights with no other connection options, though. after staying at all of the four hotels while flying through CAI, i've requested Novotel each time and they've accommodated my request (Novotel has the better buffet of the four). At ADD, if you turn down their hotels and choose to stay at your own (or with a friend who lives near Bole), you may not be let out of the airport by immigration (worked once and failed once).

There are a number of airlines who will give you a free hotel if you have a forced layover above a certain time. Qatar is one of these, but they certainly wont give you a hotel just because you fancied having a wander around Doha.

Some airlines may give you a free hotel to incite tourism even if you could choose a shorter option, but they are few and far between.

Cathay does neither.

Exactly..that's the odd/amusing thing about the OP's request.

I'm pretty sure the OP booked the Jeddah-HKG flight (which lands at HKG at 5am), and then booked the HKG-KUL midnight flight. Aka, departing 19 hours after he lands. I think there's a CX red-eye HKG-KUL. So the OP would get a full true day in Hong Kong. Pretty efficient if you've got meetings or want to do some sightseeing. Land in KUL the next morning bright and early.

The thing is, since Jeddah-HKG arrives at 5am, the OP is voluntarily skipping every other CX (4x? 5x?) and Malaysian departure in the interim. Aka, he's lamming it up in HK, or getting business done, or whatever. CX allowed the "transit", which is kind enough, but the OP is hardly a transit pax and it would defy common sense to me to provide him with accommodations since he's obviously choosing to stay in Hong Kong for a very long time on his own volition. It's not really a "transit" in my book.

To OP:

Bang!!! You replied to my earlier post that most of your hotels that you received from the airlines resulted from involuntary connections which necessitated a long/overnight layover.

In your case, it was your own choice to select your connections with such a long layover. I hate to say it but getting what you want with Cathay is next to 0, and with most airlines too. imagine what the bottomline of airlines will become if they have to entertain such requests. AFAIK, rooms are offered when there is involuntary delays such as airframes going tech or other plane/crew related delays, or when there are no logical connections at your port of transit. In your case, you have ample.

Still, i am curious how you secure your room from QR and TK. Maybe you like to share some details.

Your "free hotel" will be after you board CX791 at 0130, catching your red eye flight. I'm sure CX will provide you with pillows and blankets....even in economy!

What were you expecting? CX to give you a free hotel room at 7pm, just so you can check out 4 hours later at 11pm??!

Just make full use of your 20 hours, and enjoy your "transit" in Hong Kong!

First let me tell u that I know someone who didn't get free hotel with QR even he were forced layover more than 8 hours
and after I asked friend of mine who working with QR about the reason he told us beucz he didn't inform them before the flight . so that what I did after I booked my ticket I called him and informed him that i'm going 2 stay in the hotel so they booked me a hotel and sent me the reservation 2 my email

About TK , I got everything from the transit port I asked do I can get room then they provided . they were really so helpful ;)

You arrive HKG at 0500. Departing at 0130 the next day.
I thought your whole purpose was to 'transit'/stopover at Hong Kong and "have some fun". If you exclude time for immigration, commute, luggage (if any) etc....you only have a little more than 13 hours to explore the city. Not a whole lot, but definitely enough for you to cover some key parts of Hong Kong if this is your first time visiting.

Or was your definition of "fun" aka arriving HKG at 5am, crash into a free hotel room provided by CX at 7am...and sleep till 7pm prior to your next flight??

I suspected that was the schedule you booked...obviously, from the screen shot you took, you passed on three earlier flights that would've gotten you to KUL plenty earlier ;). So this long, extended "transit" is pretty much completely of your own making. You might've had a slightly stronger case if everything else was sold out, but it wasn't.

Yes Jeddah has a stopover in DXB but you're not getting around that on CX so it's kinda a moot point. It's not a non-stop flight.

The way I see it, you've actually got a pretty awesome flight and schedule here. Although CX won't pay for your accommodations, HKG is one of the coolest cities in the world and you've got an awesome opportunity to go tool around the city or see the sights for a full day. It's a great schedule you picked. Tiring? Yea probably. But a really awesome opportunity without having to buy two tickets. Great deal if you ask me. You'll arrive in KUL early morning and can do your meetings/see family/go home whatever with a full day in front of you.
