Baggage Question
I am a former frequent flyer with Star Alliance. Travel slowed the last few years but is picking up again. Having had status, I never much worried about the nuances of bag requirements, but given a long layoff from int'l travel I come back to a world where second bags are requiring a fee on some carriers. So my question is this -
Upcoming trip SFO-PEK. Layover in HKG. CX to HKG, and either AC or KA to PEK. Will the two bag allowance for Y apply to connecting leg from HKG-PEK? Or will I be required to pay overages (weight or piece) when connecting off the mainline? I can't seem to get a straight answer from any airline site.
Any guidance will be appreciated.
Asking same question over on the SQ thread, as I am unsure which alliance I will choose to stick with. Either way, these ridiculous baggage measures offer great incentive to regain status ASAP.

Even CA partners with CX, it is still best to book KA.

It will be on one reservations. The second leg is a choice between AC and KA. Assuming that means over-the-sea carrier standards apply the whole way, but again, there does not seem to be any definitive evidence.

My booking confirmation e-mail also says 2 bags to final destination, but this e-mail was sent by AA and not CX, so once I am in HKG, CX could refuse to honor it.
In short, I too am interested in definitive answers to the OP's question.

I was assured by CX phone sales that my US-origination allowance would apply the whole way (2nd leg is on KA; by itself it would have a 30kg allowance rather than 2 bags) even though I was going to be in HKG for over 24 hours. I don't trust phone sales staff, though.

Any reservation that touches the US/Canada will have the piece concept for checked baggage allowance applied to the WHOLE ticket/itinerary. This includes stopovers and any non-US/Canada flights (HKG-PEK, in this instance). So you will have 2 pieces of 50 or 70 lbs (for Y or F/J respectively) for the entire itinerary.

Thanks, that is what I suspected. I know about transit, no one suggests that there is any problem with transit. Both the OP and I were asking about stopovers.
