Baggage Question
I am a former frequent flyer with Star Alliance. Travel slowed the last few years but is picking up again. Having had status, I never much worried about the nuances of bag requirements, but given a long layoff from int'l travel I come back to a world where second bags are requiring a fee on some carriers. So my question is this -
Upcoming trip SFO-PEK. Layover in HKG. CX to HKG, and either AC or KA to PEK. Will the two bag allowance for Y apply to connecting leg from HKG-PEK? Or will I be required to pay overages (weight or piece) when connecting off the mainline? I can't seem to get a straight answer from any airline site. Any guidance will be appreciated. Asking same question over on the SQ thread, as I am unsure which alliance I will choose to stick with. Either way, these ridiculous baggage measures offer great incentive to regain status ASAP. |
CX still allow 2 pieces for long-haul Y, while AC reduced to 1 piece only.
Are you planning to buy your SFO-HKG and HKG-PEK ticket together? Or separately? |

It is probably a no-brainer to choose CX for this itinerary given they wholly own Dragonair, and fly to PEK from HKG almost hourly. Connection is seamless and 2 bags are allowed, even for non-status Y pax.

Layover in HKG.

It will be on one reservations. The second leg is a choice between AC and KA. Assuming that means over-the-sea carrier standards apply the whole way, but again, there does not seem to be any definitive evidence.
My booking confirmation e-mail also says 2 bags to final destination, but this e-mail was sent by AA and not CX, so once I am in HKG, CX could refuse to honor it. In short, I too am interested in definitive answers to the OP's question. |

I was assured by CX phone sales that my US-origination allowance would apply the whole way (2nd leg is on KA; by itself it would have a 30kg allowance rather than 2 bags) even though I was going to be in HKG for over 24 hours. I don't trust phone sales staff, though.

Any reservation that touches the US/Canada will have the piece concept for checked baggage allowance applied to the WHOLE ticket/itinerary. This includes stopovers and any non-US/Canada flights (HKG-PEK, in this instance). So you will have 2 pieces of 50 or 70 lbs (for Y or F/J respectively) for the entire itinerary.

OK, thanks! Other airlines don't follow this rule (BA, as a OW example), so good to know that CX does. Is there an official source for this information?

It is the IATA MSC rule. However, I believe jumbojet19920711 misinterpreted it. As long as you have a transit (< 24 hrs) in HKG, the piece concept will apply for the HKG-PEK segment.
