they need to compete with TW-based carriers, which often offer the same route as a direct flight.

Home based airlines originating from home markets are most expensive. ie SQ from SIN is more expensive than SQ from HKG !
From HKG, you fly direct. If you fly on another carrier via their home city hub, it will be cheaper. So if you want to fly on CX, originate from another city via HKG for savings.
