One hour passed, two hours passed... nobody. Asking airport staff and the best answer is "I don't know". Finally just do it the hard way and re-check-in, which ended up to be easier anyway.

I really hope an airport like PVG is much better at this nowadays...
We seem to have similar feelings about MU.

(I've been enduring them ~3x/month for the past 5 months due to their virtual monopoly on my main route, but I put my foot down when other options are available.)

Details from the PVG airport website here
Yep, the problem is transit desk is empty most of the times it seems.....

Based on others comments, I guess I was lucky.

I flew TPA-ORD-PVG-HKG last November on a AA issued ticket.
In TPA, my two suitcases were tagged to HKG final destination but I was only handed the first two boarding passes on AA metal. When I arrived in PVG there was luckily 1 person manning the AA/CX/KA transfer and I managed to arrive first (I was at the back in Y but I walk fast). I was handed my CX last leg boarding pass with lounge invite. Went through the back, then up some stairs and I arrived at Departures level X-Ray screening. Didn't need to go through immigration. Such a breeze. My two checked luggages also well arrived with me in HKG. ^

When I first started East Asian assignments I needed to rely on company accounting team to buy me tickets. I used to fly either MU or Northwest Airlines. Urgh urgh urgh.

Luckily as I got promoted I can dictate my own tickets and it's CX all the way!

How you hack all that time in Y is beyond me, I know you seem to get a lot of upgrades and I noticed you are now going to be dropping down to Gold so hopefully your promotion will allow travel up front at last

Just completed transit

MH to AA was told can't check bags through. Lost 45 minutes at immigration both out and in. Left me very few minutes at lounge for quick drink.

Bags were ready and check in at AA was good.
