CX to Peru?

Front page article in Peru Business Newspaper "Gestion" today: "Gigantic Cathay Pacific will fly to Peru". The article goes on to say that the Jorge Chavez airport in Lima is being considered as a South American hub for CX.

How exciting. I wonder where CX would have to stopover. HK to Peru direct is not possible, right?

Seattle could be interesting. Seattle has no current service to HKG or to South America. But I suppose CX would choose YVR or LAX.

It looks like a 20.5 hour direct flight. Is this possible?

Why Lima and not EZE, SCL, GRU or GIG? Does not make sense.

It's possibly the closest hub from HKG that partner LAN serves. It would be interesting they start a new route with a stopover at HNL.

It makes sense to LAN. Lima is LANs hub. Look at a map of South America. In addition, the airport has been voted the best in South America during the last few years and is expanding.

CX needs 5th Freedom traffic rights onwards to LIM and that city might be restricted to YVR. CX may codeshare with LA should LA decide to fly from US gateway.

I've heard that CX is considering Santiago to connect with LA. But codesharing with LA remains at the moment.

Ha! I know there have been long-haul tests of the 777-300ER from LHR to HKG going west which is 20 plus hours. Didn't know if it was possible on a commercial flight though.

Keep in mind that now even GRU is a hub for LAN/TAM, new member of One World.

Lan is, Tam not yet. As at 11 July 2012, it remains as a rumour that LATAM will choose to stay in OneWorld, although that might be a very likely outcome.
