Moving Map operational into US

We were recently on CX# 840 HKG-JFK and the map wasn't funcitonal for the entire trip. IIRC at one time the map was turned off for security reasons. Is this currently the case ? Any recent instances where it was functional ?

Was it when your flight is around Chicago? The Chicago NATO Summit 2012 was held between May 19 and 21

Sorry. I know that flights into the DC area get it turned off at a certain point on approach but in this case it was never on from departure time onwards. For an avid watcher that was a long 16 hours.

Funny, because I was flying 888 from HKG to YVR a couple of weeks ago, and the map wasn't on as well...

It worked on 884 HKG->LAX last Thursday...even showed the cool graphic that had the plane superimposed over Google Earth as we approached the airport.

Is it just me or does the "new" moving map programme make it incredibly hard to figure out what route the flight has taken?

I was on 830 last week and the map was operational throughout the flight.

Concur with midlevels' observation. The new moving map is weird. The "heading" of the dummy aircraft now does not point to the actual heading. The pre-drawn route does not reflect what the aircraft will be flying neither....

Thanks everyone. The outage on #840 was in effect Studio CX being down. I know it's subjective but this was a dissapointment for me.

Was on 883 in mid April and it was operational throughout the entire flight.

What do you mean by "new" map? I was recently on a 77G (almost factory fresh, B-KQB) with the "new" interface and never really realized a "new" map, do you mean the animation of the plane flying over the globe from origin to destination? I think that has always been on 77Ws, but not the 74As.

I think it was quite clear that I meant the new "moving map programme" and I did not mean that the map of Earth had changed....

And yes, this new map software is on all the 77Ws so it's not really new as such, I just meant the newest iteration. Honestly I hate it - the improved graphics and animations make it impossible to tell where the aircraft has flown, and which way it is headed.

Correct. The plane now always points directly (i.e., Great Circle route) towards the destination, regardless of the route you are actually flying to get there.
