Darkness of the AVOD system

Has anyone else noticed how terribly dark the display is on the AVOD system? Even with the brightness turned up to the full, any scene where it's dark is completely unwatchable (most recently the opening sequences of Thor.) To me this would seem like a simple tweak of the contrast setting on the main system.

I've experienced this consistently in F & J on the YYZ route as well as in the new business seat (lucky hardware swap?) on a SIN route.

I've sent my feedback through customer service and apparently they'll speak to their product department but I'm wondering how many others find this annoying.

According to the ISM on one of the flights, I'm not the first passenger to comment on this.

I've noticed this too.

Best to avoid movies with lots of dark scenes I guess...

YES....precisely. It is a huge annoyance. Particularly bad when you're laying down (I have no idea for Y, but definitely an issue in J and F). I never remembered this happening much before 1+ years ago, but nearly every flight I can remember in the last 6 months has been like this.

I first noticed it when watching an episode of "The Pacific" many months (maybe a year) back. I thought something was wrong with my AVOD. But then, it seemed like every flight after had that issue.

I think more people need to make formal complaints.

I was fine the first few times but now I think it totally ruins the experience, most movies with any sort of action have scenes in the dark. I was extremely disappointed to see that this issue was present on the new business seat as well.

I'm wondering if Cathay decided to do this on purpose thinking that it would increase the life of their screens?

Could be. Perhaps we should request that DMs should get a few more Watts

A little, there should be an option for screen brightness under options

yea, what we're referring to is when the screen brightness is already completely turned up. This has been an issue I can clearly remember on nearly all - if not all - of the long-haul flights in J/F (10+) I've done in the last 6 months or so

Yup, I had to find an 'in-between' angle that I could fall asleep / watch the screen...and yes the first minutes of Thor were horrible...couldn't see anything!

This also has to do with how bright the cabin is of course. With the lights on or during the day with window shades up, it's hard to see anything. But at night, it's not too bad, although they probably could still improve it a bit.

Fully agree. First thing I do now whenever I switch on a movie is always turn up brightness to max. Useless in case of dark scenes.
