Question Waitlisting...for dummies!

Hey All,

Can anyone explain the concept/procedures of waitlisting? I'm currently on a waitlist for a mileage upgrade and I'm curious as to how it all works! Also, do I need to call MPC to chase the waitlist? Or will they contact me when an upgrade becomes available?

Thanks!

for airline wait lists, they are often sorted by request date within elite status....so the highest level elite with the oldest ask date is 1st, then the rest w/i that status....

however, cathay may be different...

Yes. As far as I know, CX does it the way you described (first sorted by elite status, then sorted by age of the request for the second sort to break the tie). As a DM, when I call CX and am waitlisted for an award redemption, they almost always say "as a DM, you are on the highest priority waitlist available...." (which I presume means almost the highest...with exceptions probably being any DMP who decides to request a redemption or maybe friends/VIP of CX, etc.)

I think they go by elite status. Have always gotten upgrades using miles. Although sometimes the wait is a couple of months, I always seem to get cleared around T-20 days (the shortest time before departure) to around T-1 month (the average). And I get a text message and a phone call from MPC to confirm. (This goes for both J-F and Y-J redemptions.) From the other posts elsewhere in this forum, however, it seems that non-MPC (i.e. BA/AA members) wait a bit longer to clear, sometimes up to T-1 day...
