Long connection in HK

I have an approx. 8 hour connection in Hong Kong en route to London from Australia.

I am just wondering if I will be able to go into town during those 8 hours without having to reclaim my baggage or check-in again? I don't need a Visa to visit HK.

Absolutely! Transit less than 24 hours can have luggage check-through, no need to reclaim.

As "letsflythere" mentioned, you can go out of airport. Airport Express train takes only 24mins to city centre. Have some food or drink and walk around. I am sure you will have great time there. Welcome to my home city! :-)

Thank you very much.

That should allow me a good few hours in town.

I presume I don't have to check-in/show up at the check-in counter again? That means I just need to make it back to the airport in time for boarding?

As long as you have your boarding passes already, no need to check-in agian

Be sure to buy a "same day return" ticket on the airport express (train); basically same price as one way but with a free same-day return. Great service and great city to visit on an 8 hour transit.

Depending on your baggage allowances, if you really wanted to have a bag with you when you arrived you can check one bag through to final destination and one just to hong kong, and can check it back in again at at the airport express desks in hong kong / kowloon. Otherwise, as has been said, you'll have your boarding passes, just make sure your back at the airport 30 minutes or so before your next flight. Airport Express is a great service.

Apparently if I choose to leave the airport and return, I have to pay extra airport taxes in HK. Is that true? If so, when and where do I pay - on arrival or prior to departure from HK? Have travelled through HK many times and never see anywhere that collects airport taxes (apart from what's paid on the airfares already)...
